As hideous as the subject matter, racism and its manifestations, though different today, still raging through most societies, the book is incredibly enlightening on how life was with lynchings a frequent occurrence....the lawlessness, over-running (often with little resistance) of gangs of murderous citizens and giddy onlookers, sheriffs, etc....We still have so long a road to go. This is a sad and terrible look at human's disregard to others, only wish it were a thing past. Though "colored rest rooms, water fountains, colored set to the rear (buses)" are not longer with us, racism is still rampant, often sophisticated and covert.

Outstanding historical account of the horrific injustices committed against Afro-Americans pre-civil war and post-civil war. One of the best books, I have ever read. Also, it highlights the fact that terrorism originated in the United State of America.

This book will bring you to tears. How white society could treat Black people and get away with it. No feelings at all. always based on lies told by someone usually a woman. Welcome to 2014, same thing only now it is the police. Our so called protectors. It is a sad commentary on how we hate in this country.

At times it is hard to read about the lynchings. It should be taught in school history classes so that we never forget and make the awful mistake to repeating this part of the US history.
