Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Writing from a critical center that is melanin-based/feminist/pro-queer/unabashedly-leftist, LA-based writer Ernest Hardy (a Sundance Fellow and member of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association whose work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Vibe, the LA Times, the LA Weekly and more) pens essays, interviews and reviews whose subject matter ranges from underground hip-hop and American indie film to modern French cinema, from revealing interviews with Warren Beatty, Meshell NdegeOcello and Les Nubians to an essay on gay rappers and queer rap audiences that pushes beyond the clichés of the media-stoked "down-low" phenomenon.

About the Author

Ernest Hardy writes about film and music from his home base of Los Angeles. His criticism has appeared in the LA Weekly, the LA Times, Vibe, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, the Source, Millennium Film Journal, Flaunt, Request, Minneapolis City Pages, and the reference books 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die and Classic Material: The Hip-Hop Album Guide, among others. He's written liner notes for Chuch D Presents: Louder Than a Bomb, the box-set Say It Loud: A Celebration of Black Music in America, Curtis Mayfield: Gospel, and the box-set Superstars of Seventies Soul; he is the winner of the 2006 ASAP-Deems Taylor Award for excellence, honoring his liner notes for the Chet Baker CD, Career 1952-1988. A Sundance Fellow and a member of LAFCA (Los Angeles Film Critics Association), he's sat as a juror for the Sundance Film Festival, the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival and Los Angeles Outfest. He's also co-programmed the FUSION Film Festival in Los Angeles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chitlin's & Caviar.., June 1, 2007
By Bill Brown (Harlem, New York) - See all my reviews
Hardy is the quintessential writer and this book is truly the tip of the iceberg. Like most such writers he is sorely under appreciated and often overlooked. He's one of those writers that other writers know and love but of whom the public is usually sadly ignorant. However, one reading of Blood Beats Vol 1 will confirm in any readers mind the powerful insight of his prose - whether or not you agree with his opinions. Not only is his analysis multi-leveled, thorough and for me, spot on, but the writing is elegant, urbane and and a pleasure - no, really a luxury (in this day and age) to read. It seems to slip from his pen like an easy conversation. It is REAL writing. Not the tripe that passes for writing found in most pop cultural criticism of our day. All of it without being condescending or obtuse.

His critical reach goes so far beyond what passes for such writing these days that it's almost criminal that He's not required reading for young upcoming writers. Blood Beats: Vol 1 critically accesses artists like: Bjork, Lauryn Hill, Tupac Shakur, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Les Nubians, Me'Shell NdegeOcello, and films like: Before Night Falls, The Delta, Love Jones and Ghost Dog. His analysis engages the reader by tying in social, economic, sexual and racial subtextures in the work and in our lives. He makes it all make so much more sense than most of us even imagined was there. Life and art are so much deeper than most expect but Hardy serves it up like gossip over chitlins and cavier. Don't get it twisted and don't be intimidated - we all can enjoy it. So dig in. Learn about artists, learn about film, learn about life, learn to critique, and learn to write. Read this book.

Hopefully Blood Beats Vol 1 and the soon to be published Blood Beats Vol. 2 will finally bring him some much deserved, and long overdue notoriety and acclaim.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dig In and Dig It, September 5, 2006
Hardy writes about music, film and pop culture like a street-wise Greil Marcus, but with singing prose and a backbeat you can't lose. Must reading for anyone who really wants to know and wants to have some fun getting to know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep thoughts on music and film mostly, September 3, 2006
Ernest puts an sociological twist on much of his writings about films, music, or current trends which I like a lot. His writings have a tone of peace and good music and film.
