I am a portrait artist. For promotional events, I do quick sketches of children in stores throughout the year. I was often asked if I could do silhouettes - I didn't think I'd ever figure out how and I couldn't find an artist willing to reveal the secrets. Luckily, on an internet search one day, I stumbled across Kathryn Flocken's book. I was thrilled when it finally arrived and even more thrilled to find that it was exactly what I needed. She assumes you don't know anything about the art and tells you step-by-step how to hold the paper, the scissors, what your eyes should be looking at, posture, what you should be thinking about while cutting... It goes on to give you practical tips on the business aspect of it all and other ideas. I later had the pleasure to meet her in person and watch her at work! I was fascinated and inspired and so pleased to meet someone finally willing to share her knowledge!

I have to say, I've read other books about how to cut silhouettes and was shocked to discover "short cuts" that were not true to the art. Sometimes a parent who may not have an artistic eye may not catch that their silhouette of their child is actually a very generic template with only hair and minor details added. Being a portrait artist, I am fanatic about wanting to capture the individual's true profile - not just a pretty generic shape. I'm so glad I read Kathryn Flocken's book first so I learned the traditional method that makes her technique more of a fine art form than just a craft. I highly recommend her book and her supplies as well. I now use what I've learned to make money cutting silhouettes in addition to my paintings and sketches.

This is a one of a kind in the art of silhouette portraiture. Kathryn Flocken has renewed my childhood memories and appreciation for the silhouette artist and art of portraiture.
As an educator, I was thrilled to find consideration for multiple learning styles in this friendly and down-to-earth guide. Kathryn's attention to detail goes beyond the history and how to of the art form. Equally noteworthy: This book is so well written it serves as an exceptional example of A+ word choice, clarity, voice, and more! Parents and teachers! Capable artists and scholars! Get this TREASURE!

Format: Paperback
Where was Kathryn Flocken's book when I was learning the fine art of silhouette cutting over 15 years ago? When I first discovered this unique art form, I was fortunant enough to have been taught the basics by two experienced Silhouette Artists, each woman having over 12 years under their belts...but I couldn't learn enough from these talented women (one decided to start a family, so she gave it up, and the other took another job offer out of state), so I was left with my limited knowledge, and had to figure the rest out for myself!
That's where Kathryn's book, "Silhouettes, Rediscovering the Lost Art" comes in. This delightful book, with all its information in clear, consise, easy-to-understand language, is the perfect learning tool for the budding soon-to-be silhouette artist. Not only would I have mastered the art alot sooner, all the little questions I had concerning certain techniques would have been answered. Best of all, Kathryn also shows you step-by-step how to create the right styles with all the detailed illustrations throughout the book's 170 pages. It's like having a Master Artist beside you, guiding you through all the difficult proceedures! This book would have fit the bill in my early years of learning the artform...it would've taken over where my teachers left off! Kathryn may have written this great gem 15 years too late, but it's the perfect guide for the aspiring artist who wants to learn the fine art of silhouette cutting, but can't find anyone to teach them! Better late then never!
Bravo!

I am a silhouette artist, also formerly at Disney World, and Kathryn's book is the most complete, and best silhouette art book out there. As a self-taught artist, I did not believe that someone could inform others on how a silhouette can be made. If there is such a book, this is it! I reccommend it. Cindi Harwood Rose

This book covers the most pertinent points and information that one needs in order to start on the road of creating quality and professional silhouettes. As a professional silhouette artist myself, I can vouch for the great techniques that are given in this book, as well as the attention to detail the author places upon the methods of creating a great career.

Some of the methods presented here are ones that I do differently, and find that they leave a little bit to be desired, but you'll have no problems figuring out what works best for you in an actual work setting and change those to your own particular methods.

In all, I would recommend this book to anyone aspiring to enter this unique craft of which there are not many people still practicing this art.

I received this book as a Christmas gift for Christmas 2012. I was very interested in learning how to hand cut silhouettes in the traditional manner (no drawing, tracing, computers, etc.) and after much research felt this book would be the most useful resource in helping me reach my goals. I was right! Kathryn's book is the most complete, detailed instructional guide you will find on today's market. I highly recommend it if you are looking to learn the steps to cut silhouettes. Kathryn writes in a clear and friendly manner that is easy to understand and makes the steps needed to learn to cut easy to grasp. Information such as how to cut hair, glasses, etc. are broken down into easy to read chapters with very helpful and easy to understand illustrations to follow throughout the book. These illustrations are very helpful visuals to help you understand the correct manner in how to cut and how you should start the process.

While I have been an artist my entire life I do not feel that prior artistic expertise is needed to learn how to hand cut silhouettes due to the clearly written text and illustrations that Kathryn provides. Kathryn helps you to realize that all humans and even inanimate objects are a series of lines and curves that when broken down step by step can be captured in a beautiful hand cut silhouette. With lots of practice and by reading and re-reading Kathryn's book you too can learn to cut silhouettes within a relatively short time period.

This is a true art form and if you wish to learn this classic art form this is the one and only book you will need to learn the craft. Do purchase today!
