Great Step-by-Step Guide to Filing Provisional Patents, August 12, 2004
I would highly recommend that all entrepreneurs contemplating
the need to file patents buy the book "Patent Pro Se, The
Entrepreneur's Guide to Provisional Patent Applications."
This just published guide was written by John Ferrell, the
co-founder of Carr & Ferrell LLP, a leading Silicon Valley
intellectual property and technology-focused corporate law firm.
This well-organized guide does a good job demystifying the
patent process, which can seem intimidating. The book clearly
explains all the steps necessary to file a provisional patent.
The book is organized as a loose-leaf binder and includes two
CDs providing an audio version plus all necessary forms and
sample correspondence.
This book would be a worthwhile investment whether you are
considering filing provisional patents on your own or
through an attorney.

Best book for Provisional Patents - Highly Recommended, July 26, 2004
Many people dream of inventing something really awesome and succeeding from a humble garage, like Hewlett and Packard, to riches and world-wide fame. Getting a patent is frequently a major step in achieving success. Unfortunately it takes a substantial amount of time and money plus you have to find a good patent attorney. As a Silicon Valley attorney who's been involved with the business side of technology for many years, I've been approached countless times by inventors with terrific ideas who need to get a patent in place to protect their rights before they go public. I refer them to good patent attorneys but many tell me they just can't afford it.
Provisional patents were created a few years ago in part to help you if your dreams exceed your budget. They get you substantial protection quickly and economically, entirely on your own so you make some money and follow-up with a full-blown non-provisional patent application later. No searching or waiting for government approval. However, as is the usual case with governmental filing instructions, what to include in the application is still too legalistic, ambiguous and confusing, not to mention rife with potential pitfalls if not done correctly. What was needed was a book sharply focused solely on how to effectively get to this first level in the patent system.
Directly on point is John Ferrell's book, Patent Pro Se, The Entrepreneur's Guide to Provisional Patent Applications. "Pro se" is the Latin phrase that the law uses to describe representing yourself without any attorney. Ferrell's book is written at a level that a non-lawyer can clearly understand and unlike some other books, it is concise enough that it is not discouraging to go through. It doesn't overload or confuse you with more information than you need to get a provisional. If you don't want to read it, you can listen to him on the included audio CDs which also include data files duplicating all the printed forms in the book. He's included a primer on patent law, numerous examples, filing checklists, online links, and even a preaddressed envelope to the exact mail stop at U.S. Patent Office.
There are no excuses anymore. It's everything you need to get "Patent Pending" on your new invention and it's a fraction of the cost that you would spend on just an hour of time with a patent attorney. This book is the easiest way to get a provisional patent and I highly recommend it.

Highly recommended step-by-step guide to file a PPA, August 12, 2004
This book explains in a concise and effective way the patent laws and filing process. It is an invaluable tool for the entrepreneur who wants to protect her idea during the product development phase. The book describes how to prepare a Provisional Patent Application and file the documents with the USPTO. The book contains a lot of good examples of dos and don'ts and all forms you must fill to file your PPA. It even includes the envelope to send the express mail! I completed my process in less than a week and I have already received back my filing number from the USPTO.
