Product Description
Is your gospel too small? Is it primarily concerned with getting people to heaven? Ironically, God intends to make his home here on earth¿in the community of believers. Life as a follower of Jesus was never meant to be lived alone. Hearing God speak and following his voice are jobs for a "we" rather than a "me." When the Apostle Paul announces that "Christ in you [is] the hope of glory," that "you" is plural. In other words, Christ in Y'ALL is the hope of glory. In Christ In Y¿all, Neil Carter seeks to explain how spiritual formation is a collective endeavor. After spending nearly a decade meeting in homes with Christians, Carter observes key elements to having a thriving Christian community, and gives practical insights into surviving the pitfalls of home-based fellowships.

3.0 out of 5 stars More detail needed, June 12, 2009
I think the basic premise of this book sound. Today's church struggles with community in practice. Christ in you-all (or "Ya'll" as he puts it-obnoxious but memorable) is the right translation of the classic verse.

Carter's passion comes through as well. Too bad he didn't give more concrete reasons for why. His experiences are valuable but not enough to change decades of tradition.

I regularly found myself wanting more details, more footnotes and more examples. When an author makes statements that challenge the status quo like Carter does, it's a real challenge to show clearly (beyond your gut, your opinion, and a few verses) why things should change. I was looking for this but left mostly wanting.

In summary, Carter is good at making you think through why we do what we do as church leaders. He challenges the status quo but could do that much better with more specifics. The bibliography in the back does help.

I also wanted more specific suggestions on what to do about it. Perhaps that was outside his scope or for a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars christ in us all, March 7, 2009
I found the book to be very thought provoking while still being easy to read and comprehend. With the ease of someone with working knowledge of how to live a life is full of Jesus, Carter illuminate spiritual truths about how God must be expressed through all of His followers. This would be a great book to read and discuss with other believers eager to explore more of the Lord.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Really Wonderful and Important Book, February 7, 2009
I recently read Neil Carter's book CHRIST IN Y'ALL, and I was both encouraged and challenged by it. Neil reminds us that the Christian life is to be lived in community, not in isolation. The illustrations and analogies that Neil uses are so good and are effective in communicating his message--that we ALL make up the Body of Christ. Each of us is an important part of that Body, and God speaks to and through every one of us.

Neil takes a hard look at our church traditions and invites us to question why we do some of the things we do. Are they effective? Are they meaningful? Or are they possibly a hindrance? This is not to say that all church traditions are fruitless, but they should all be examined. HOW we gather as a church is one of these to be examined. Neil suggests that meeting in homes creates a family atmosphere, which is more inviting and more conducive to the natural growth of relationships and community than the atmosphere created in a large church building. It is much harder for people to "slip through the cracks" among a group of twenty than among a group of 500!

I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in fostering a community of faith. Neil's book is well-written in a conversational tone and is quite effective in portraying the methods and reasons for living this life of faith with others around us.
