Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Tango in America is the story of a little green parrot from Argentina whose family is forcibly brought to New York to be sold into the pet trade. At Kennedy Airport, the birds escape from captivity but her father is recaptured and sent west. To find him, Tango must travel across North America.

From the Publisher

Tango in America is a dramatic story for young adult readers based on the real life plight of wild Quaker parakeets in the U.S.A. Its action and setting are closely based on the real-life habits of these wild birds, which were imported from Argentina to North America, escaped from captivity, and now live in urban areas of New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachussets, Rhode Island, Florida, Texas, and many other states. One of the parrots' real-life heroes, Chicago’s Mayor Harold Washington, who protected them from harm in the 1980’s, plays a key role in the story.

Tango in America is also a coming-of-age story about a young bird in search of her lost father. As Tango crosses the country, she learns about the value of teamwork from a group of wild ducks, the value of generosity when she helps a captive parrot to fly, the value of altruism when he is injured, and the value of courage when she outwits a feral cat. She also discovers the depths of her own artistic talents when a group of wild crows insist that she sing for them. By the time she meets her long-lost father in Chicago, she has grown up, gained confidence, and is ready to accept the challenges of a young adult.

(REAL NAME)
You don't have to be a kid to enjoy this whimsical book. Not only is it a good story that is well written, it is bound to pique interest and curiousity about these real enterprising and survivalist parrots able to survive in North American climates against tremendous odds. The authors website is facinating too.
