The Amazing Mythical Goddess Deck, July 15, 2009
I got my deck a week ago and am amazed by it already. First, the design and drawings are so beautiful. Each tells its own story and really draws you in. Learning the new system has been very easy. The deck just flows and each card really tells its own story. I highly recommend this deck.

Gorgeous Woman-Centric Deck, May 19, 2009
"Our planet and all her species are at a delicate crossroads. The key to the survival of life on Earth in these days is the integration and expression of the Sacred Feminine in all of us, women and men. At this crucial time on the planet, humankind is being forced out of denial of its own divinity. Specifically, this is the spirit of the Goddess on Earth, not necessarily in worship, but in honoring, in each of us, our feminine core of being. She has always existed in all of her forms, no matter how buried, and is now returning in full expression for the healing of humankind." - From the Mythical Goddess Tarot companion book
From Mother Mary to Lakshmi, White Buffalo Calf Woman to Brigid, the Major Arcana of the Mythical Goddess Tarot glows with diverse faces of the Divine Feminine. Bordered in purple with some Trumps renamed, the Majors speak to the deep inner desire for healing, creation, acceptance, initiation and union.
Although woman-centric in imagery, the messages of Mythical Goddess Tarot speak across gender lines and racial divisions, spiritual paths and personal needs. Richly illustrated in vibrant hues by Katherine Skaggs, this deck is compassionately honest, surprisingly blunt, incisively accurate, and ultimately hopeful.
The Minor Arcana suits are Seas, Fire, Earth and Wind, with the Court Cards following Child, Maiden, Mother and Crone designation. Each has a relevant keyword adding to possible intuitive insights, with several cards offering delightful, clever expansion on traditional meanings.
Several of my favorite cards (a few because of the utter originality) from the vivid, lavishly illustrated Mythical Goddess Tarot include:
* 8 of Earth (Nurturance) - A full-figured woman surrounded by vegetation waters a mound of daisies, healing and love emanating from her other hand.
* 10 of Wind (Illusion) - On a sunny day, a person garbed in full yellow raingear stands under a red umbrella while a tiny rain cloud hovers above.
* Crone of Fire (Transmutation) - A smiling phoenix raises triumphantly from the ashes.
* 7 of Earth (Failure) - A leafless gnarled tree fails to thrive amidst city skyscrapers and gray skies.
* Child of Seas (Innocence) - A child lies asleep in a giant conch shell, protected from a heaving wave.
* 9 of Wind (Criticism) - Lightning bolts emanate from a figure's head and mouth with a hand points in seeming accusation, powerfully capturing the damage inflicted by harsh judgment.
The 127-page companion booklet to the Mythical Goddess Tarot is one of the most finely crafted I've seen, with each card reproduced in full-color miniature. Sage Holloway provides the astrological correlation for each card (unobtrusively painted on each card), as well as detailed explanations and encouraging advice. The shiny box it comes in is very sturdy and easy to open (thankfully!)
The glossy cards measure approximately 4 ½ x 3 ¼ inches with an intricate reversible pattern on back. Each of the Minor Arcana cards has an arresting border reflecting their elemental association: Wind cards are bordered with cloud-strewn skies, Seas have steel gray waves, Earth depicts leafy trees, while Fire cards have orange flame borders.
I've been using the Mythical Goddess Tarot for several months now and it's one of a few "go to" decks that I use for personal readings and spiritual contemplation. I've found it especially helpful for ascertaining values, aligning with soul purpose, gaining insight into familial relationships, deriving comfort in stressful times, and sorting out emotional signals.
This deck is truly one of the finest I've come across in recent years and has become one of my favorites. It's warm, user-friendly, diverse (in imagery and message), and clear. Although it's self-published, it rivals any deck produced by known publishers in both quality and presentation. (It's available from Amazon.com at this link.)
Thank you, Sage Holloway and Katherine Skaggs, for being a wide-open conduit for such an energizing and empowering Tarot deck!

These Cards Are Different.... (5 Stars!), April 23, 2009
These cards are different than your traditional tarot deck in the sense that the captions found at the bottom of each card read like an oracle deck. Therefore this deck is great for someone who is new to tarot as the captions freezes the essence within the meaning of that card.
There's 78 cards in this deck. Instead of your typical Wands, Pentacles, Cups, and Swords you have Fire, Earth, Seas, Wind, and Ether (Ether!?!?) as themes. This renaming can help aid in your understanding of the traditional Tarot. The cards also have zodiac signs and planets on many or all of the cards. I am not sure how to incorporate the planets, but I've found that the zodiac signs work well especially if you inquire about the personality of an individual.
When I first opened this deck there was a wonderful smell of fabrication which emulated a desert rain (the smell or creosote). For me that is so refreshing as a southwestern native.
When I took the cards out of the box I went through each and every card. The first card showed a colorful goddess with breasts. Then the next card you see breasts. Well, you'll see breasts a lot with this deck and some emphasis on genitalia. This might not be the most appealing deck for those who are not comfortable with their sexuality or female anatomy. However, after shuffling through the cards I found that cards to be pretty with nice color choices. The back of the deck has to be my most favorite of decks as the back is a kaleidescope of patterns resembling that of an open fruit (more like guacamole) bearing the sweetness of its seed (hearts, triangles, etc.). Because of this deck's backing, I find it easier to meditate on a question.
The cards read differently than what I get from the LWB. The LWB has 124 pages of colored card captions and a detail for each card with some instructions about the theme of each suite and the number meanings. I personally find it a highly accurate deck when used with traditional Tarot meanings instead of what is in the book. The meanings in the book tend to bleed into one another, a sense of positivity.
I find this deck really excellent in doing personal readings and I've gotten some of the best accuracy from them. Like I said earlier, it is great in diving deep into the personalities of people you may be inquiring about.
I also like this deck because if you have an astrology background you can apply this to the cards. For example 10 of Wands is entitled "Illusions" and the astrological sign is Gemini, known for handling too many things at one time, not being able to complete one task fully. These cards often offer messages of confirmation within the same reading by using the captions for each card and the traditional meanings. Also, you can look at the card and meditate on whatever pops at out you and this can also become the true meaning of the card during that specific reading.
The deck shuffles beautifully. I like this deck, I wish the pictures were simply drop dead gorgeous, but they are still alluring in a different way.
UPDATE (From 4 to 5 Stars):
The more I play with these cards the more I learn. At first I wasn't 100% impressed with the messages I found in the LWB. Not to say the book does not add value, it seems the messages of the book steps into the world of oracle decks (positive messages even if the traditional Tarot meaning for the card is negative). At first I was not appreciative of this, but I find this to be such a positive attribute of the deck. So you have a Tarot and an Oracle deck in one.
I've now learned how to use the planets in combination with the Zodiac Signs with these cards. Sometimes when we do a reading for someone else we may get the appropriate cards conveying the message of the emotional circumstances the person might be in- but not all of the time! But with the planets/zodiac signs the reader is able to feel the emotion of the querent, or in helping with a situation it may inform the querent how they should behave in solving a problem.
Therefore I use the cards in such manner: The Caption- tells you what needs to be done; The Zodiac Sign- Expresses the general emotional theme; The Planet- explains what is going on and combining it with the Zodiac sign informs you of how the querent should behave or how the querent may be feeling. If the card is in reverse (though they are strongly against reading the cards in reversed), it simply is an indicator that the querent hasn't been on their best behavior in the ways as described by the zodiac sign and planet.
For example I got the Courage Card (7 of Fire). It shows Leo= pride and Mars= sensitivity and strength of the will. Mars in Leo often means courageous, compassionate, enthusiastic, proud, needing praise for one's effort. This card is telling me to kill the other with kindness and to be strong of will, which reflects the traditional Tarot message of the 7 of Wand card- standing up for yourself and what you believe in; currently holding the higher moral ground in this issue- Inner courage is far more superior than physical strength.
I also found this deck to be helpful in doing quick easy readings. The borders around the card images are very noticeable with their resonating colors. Fire (Wands)= A bold and lively firey red. Earth (Pentacles/Coins)= A mottled grassy green. Seas (Cups)= a modulating deep blue. Wind (Swords)= An icey polar blue. While the Major Arcana has a Purple color. Once you place down the cards, the border colors give you an immediate sense of the overall message without having to read the captions or messages of the cards (its like reading the cards Chakra/Aura).
The pictures are pretty and I think is a really great unisex deck as men will probably find more insight in this deck as much as any woman. It wonderfully blends in everything metaphysical that is out there (astrology, some geometry, power of color, numbers, and intuitive reading). My only question is why they didn't include the planet Neptune in the deck. This is an easy/easier to read deck. Right now, this is my favorite deck (tied with Inner Child Cards and the Golden Tarot) and since buying this deck I don't foresee myself buying another one unless its as a gift.
5 Stars!
