Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Woodacre, a former Delaware state senator, and her daughter, Bane, now an advertising copywriter, offer the perspectives of a doting mother and a high-achieving daughter on milestones beginning with the senior year in high school and ending with acclimating to life post-graduation. Though most of the advice is common sense (communication and negotiation are the threads that hold together the book) and the dueling authors share a love of exclamation points and seem to be contestants in a congeniality contest, parents having a hard time understanding what's going on inside their college student child's head or wanting reassurance that their feelings of loneliness, worry and dread aren't unique would do well to pick up this perky book.

Product Description

“In my 22 years as an educator, rarely have I seen such a unique book . . . . Their style is absorbing, their format clever, and the text informative and real. Parents and students will see themselves in this book and realize that they are not alone.”-Beverly Stewart, M.Ed., president of Back to Basics Learning Dynamics

Leaving home and starting college is a major life transition-for students and parents. I'll Miss You Too is the must-have guidebook for new students and the proud parents so that together they can successfully navigate the college years, and not only protect their unique relationship, but help it to grow as well. (And to prevent a few flare-ups!)

I'll Miss You Too, by mother-daughter team Margo E. Bane Woodacre and Steffany Bane, is a must-have guidebook for students and parents that will help them to navigate the college years, and ensure that their one-of-a-kind relationship not only remains intact, but flourishes as well.

I'll Miss You Too is unique in that it is written from both sides of the mother-daughter relationship, providing valuable insight into the issues that both parent and child face, including:

-The 10 major traumas of empty nesters, (and their solutions!)
-Tips for students making the transition in the “real world”
-Communication issues, and how to set healthy expectations
-Most common problems of moving out and leaving home (for both parent and student)
-Coming home for the first time
-The personal, intimate journeys of mother and daughter when separating
- And much more…

This poignant and oftentimes hilarious guidebook provides the kind of perspective that leads to understanding, and opens the door for meaningful discussion between parent and child.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for College Students, April 18, 2003
By moira geraghty (Woodside, New York United States) - See all my reviews
When given this book, I thought I didn't need it. College, no problem! Well, my first lesson in college was that I was wrong. I did need this book. Doors Open from Both Sides, is a must have for not only college students, but also for parents. After reading through this book I learned that I wasn't the only one going through all these emotions that I had never before felt, that I wasn't the only one who was sacred, anxious, nervous, excited, and thrilled all at the same time. The thing is, I didn't just learn that other college students shared my feelings, but that my parents did too. In there own way, they were riding an emotional roller coaster right along with me.

The greatest part about Doors Open From Both Sides is that its not written by some doctor who probably doesn't even have kids, but it's written by a parent and child who experienced all these feelings and dealt with all the issues. It is the true story of a parent/ child relationship that everyone can relate to.

Going away to college, coming home for the first time, and growing up, are all issues that can be dealt with with a little patience and understanding. Door Open From Both Sides, gives that understanding, along with some tips and pointers that are realistic and helpful.

Keep this book in mind for anyone you know that may be going away to school or that has a child going away. Makes a great graduation gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deftly written and highly recommended reading., March 22, 2002
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Deftly co-authored by the mother/daughter team of Margo E. Bane Woodacre and Steffany Bane, Doors Open From Both Sides is a parent/student guide for navigating the emotional transition to college and describes the full array of new challenges facing both the parent and their child from college acceptance to graduation. Drawing on their own personal narratives, as well as the experience of other students and their parents, Woodacre and Bane have created a welcome guide that will enable families to cope with the unique pressures of a college student that can hold far more emotional trauma that might be commonly expected. The text is "reader friendly", sensible, pragmatic, practical, and strongly recommended reading for every parent with a college bound student, and ever child leaving home for their first big academic adventure and independent campus oriented living experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential tool every parent can't afford to be without, April 3, 2006
By George Etro (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I'll Miss You Too: An Off-to-College Guide for Parents and Students (Paperback)
This book was wonderfully insightful. As a single parent with a beautiful intelligent young girl I had many questions that were eloquently answered by the suggestions in this book. There are not many books out there that offer the point of view that this one does. It helped me immensely. It helped bring me and my daughter closer and aided in the confrontation that was inevitable because it eliminated any aggressive behavior due to fear. It brought to my attention the questions that you forget to ask or are unprepared to answer. This book was a great communication guide for me and my daughter to open the doors of what may be expected in this difficult but necessary transition. I am confident of the authenticity of this book and how the advice given really will pertain to your experience with your loved one. Every parent wants to be as prepared as possible in lives huge alteration's for me it was relieving to have material such as these book to make the inevitable progression of a youths education a smooth and healthy one. This book is a brilliant example of how the skills of parenthood have excelled.
