Great book! Except one thing...

I did like this book. It does have quite an extensive list of names. However some of the lists are a bit offensive. "Grocery Clerk Names", "Redneck Names". I'm all for a good chuckle, but at what point I am wondering does that look good?

The basis for names is really wide spread from Native American to Scandinavian. It's hefty, but I appreciated the first 100 pages of name science and studies on names.

Overall, I do recommend, but for the 2015 version it'd be awesome if some of the more... offensive name lists were removed.

The book definitely is what it says, but I was disappointed at the volume of repeat names in the various lists. Definitely found a few options that we like, but it didn't provide the number of ideas I was anticipating. I could have found the couple additional names we found and liked for free online myself if I hadn't been tired of looking through so many sites.

good source for a writer

I bought this to help with picking names for the characters I was writing. It is very comprehensive and has a number of variations listed for each name, which is very helpful. However, only the main entry for each name is listed with the origin and the variations can be from multiple origins (like the main name being German but there's French and English versions in the variations). It would be helpful to have the origins for the variations listed, but then again I'm using this as a writer and keeping everyone from one area in the same name origin group is more important to me than to someone actually using this book to name their baby.

Even with the lack of origins on the variations this is still a very helpful book. It doesn't fall into the trap that a lot do and only have a very narrow set of sources for their name (usually European) and while the focus is European there's names from all over the globe.

The book is extensive but some of the lists (like most popular by state) don't make sense and are very repetitive and so far this hasn't helped us choose a name but we have until February so maybe something in the book will help us.

This book was ok. It was formatted in a way that made it hard for me to look through. It was just one huge list not categorized at all. The lists they did have were very short. Not what I needed so I returned it.

Not what I expected.

I was not happy with this baby name book. The lists at the beginning are alright, but the alphabetically name lists have names on names on names that I have never heard of. I think if you are seeking more religious or ethnic names, then yes this book is for you. I am looking for more modern name lists and this book was a bust for that. Out of 100,001+ names, I only wrote down 4 girl names and 6 boy names I liked.

Reads more like a dictionary than a baby name book

Comphrensive? Yes. My children have unusual (for the US) names, but weeding through suggestions like Finesse, Flax, Flicky, and Flirt was cumbersome. This name book reads more like a dictionary, and not just for "American" suggestions, but foreign as well. Probably still a decent resource once all others have been exhausted.
