I came across Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet by surprise at a Samuel French store here in Los Angeles. I've already read all of Shakespeare's works so I had no intention of purchasing any more; however, when I saw the beautiful laser cut designs on the front of these books I just had to take a look. The design is just incredible. I've never seen any book that looked like this. Just beautiful to hold, and the inside just leaves you breathless. So, I went home and immediately purchased them through Amazon. A few days later, they are now in my personal library and something I will treasure forever. I think readers will be appreciative that the plays are clearly defined. Each play includes a full history of the work. You can tell a lot of hard work went into making these books, and it really pays off. I understand that the publishers are deciding whether to issue all the plays based on the sales of these books. I really hope people take a look and spread the word to get them. Not only will you not be disappointed, but hopefully they will complete the entire series. I am so happy to have these in my collection, and can't wait to show them off to my friends and family. I'd give this ten stars if it was available!

I actually purchased this as a gift, but after looking through it, I couldn't part with it. This version is incredible. It has stencil cutouts and on the opposite pages it has highlights of the Bard's verbiage. If you are a Shakespeare fan, you will not be able to part with it either.

Having somehow made it to the age of 53 without ever having read "Romeo and Juliet," I knew when I saw this beautifully laid out, well annotated version that the time had finally come. Shakespeare's prose and poetry are, of course, simply stellar; and with the perfect annotations in this edition, the meaning (and double meaning) of every verse is crystal clear. The story itself, however, wasn't one of my favorites -- two of the biggest drama queens in all of literature making unbelievably rash and foolhardy decisions, while the people around them behave like idiots -- I was actually looking forward to their deaths at the end. But the writing itself -- Shakespeare could write a grocery list and make it sound good. And this edition is so perfectly edited, so perfectly annotated, so beautifully laid out and typeset -- it is an absolute pleasure to read. And don't forget to read the short essays too, specifically the ones on Shakespeare's language and on how this version was edited -- extra treats that make the reading of the story even more enjoyable!

Gorgeous! I purchased this along with the others in the collection and am so glad I did! Once my mom saw them, she ordered the Hamlet version as a gift for her friend.
