4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Dominic M on January 12, 2011
Format: Paperback
I will be open from the start; I was taught and personally supervised by this author when studying at Sydney. However, I can say, with all honesty, I would would rate this book the same notwithstanding any possible bias. In fact, i chose the author as my supervisor purely because her book (much like her teaching) was incredibly interesting. Dr Olson is universally regarded as one of the top (if not the top) teachers and scholars at the uni, and her book reflects the deep thought she gives to her subject, and the passion she possesses for it.

This book is not strictly a scholarly work, and is rather targeted at a broader audience. References have been discarded to make this book more appealing to those with no need for them. Nevertheless, scholars themselves will be able to learn much from this book as it is packed with engrossing information and insight.

What this book does so well is mesh detailed specific topics, fascinatingly explained and chosen because they are fascinating in themselves, into a broad and clearly explained century-by-century overview of the period.

Of all the books on the period, this is undoubtedly one of the best. Highly recommended.
