Format: Paperback
Guibert of Nogent (1055-1124) was a Benedictine abbot, writer, and historian. He is best known for writing the first (and perhaps one of the strangest) autobiographies since Augustine's Confessions. In addition, and lesser known, was his substantial skill in writing histories. The Deeds of God Through the Franks, although not popular in its day, is an important history of the time - and our knowledge of the author himself is greater than any other historian of the period. The Deeds of God through the Franks was written between 1106-1109, only ten years later than the period between Urban's call for Crusade and the capture of Jerusalem 1099. Guibert of Nogent was not an eyewitness of the Crusade (he was an abbot of a dinky 8 person monastery near Laon France) however, his primary source, the Gesta Francorum, which he added and subtracted from is generally considered a eye-witness document. Guibert rewrote the Gesta with highly elaborate diction and added an entirely new tone, that of the "providential nature of the accomplishment" (pg 2) (the capture of Jerusalem). This tone change is easily seen in the cases of the title words - "through" instead of "by" the Franks. Despite the fact that his is a revision of an earlier chronicle, Guibert's reactions, and the French reaction to the Crusade are important indicators of prevalent opinion. Also, perhaps even more interestingly, Guibert saw the notorious Peter the Hermit, who mobilized so many peasants and other poorly armed Europeans soon to be massacred in Asia Minor before the main armies arrived. Guibert is delightfully contemptuous of the preacher.

The introduction to the volume is superb. Levine lays out all relevant background information and substantial textual analysis of Guibert's revision of the Gesta Francorum.
