This book is not what I expected, given its title, however I found it fascinating how the occurrence of one event led to the development led to another, often ending one sequence and starting another. It describes the development of thought and innovation as western Europe moved out of the Dark Ages and through the Middle Ages. This is a period and approach that is not covered well by many history books.

I highly recommend it.

the impact of the printing press on learning has been greatly underestimated. additionally, the history of copying and preserving texts prior to the press, and the impact of scribal culture on learning is much ignored. i have tried to understand how this could be the case: why do western educational systems ignore this invention and its predecessor? after reading a number of books on the subject, i came to the conclusion that the reasons this is downplayed are "religious". no one who understands this history could ever again say that some texts are "the word of god".
