Genre: Fiction/Thriller

Title: Barracuda

Author:  Mike Monahan

This book has it all. An NYPD cop on vacation after an injury, Russian Mafia, and Japanese Yakuza, Chinese and Micronesians, in what should be an idealistic setting for relaxation and recuperation. Of course, a cop is never off duty, especially when he sees something illegal going on. Mick O-Shaughnessy, -Micko- to his friends, received a gunshot wound. The police psychiatrist, with the help of her sister in a travel agency, sends him on a vacation in an effort to help Micko get over some troubling issues.

Mr. Monahan delivers a well-written thriller with numerous characters from a myriad of cultures, and backgrounds working and living at Bikini Atoll. A new resort is getting ready for the grand opening and Micko steps unaware, into a web of crooks, soon strange things begin to happen.

You will have to read this thriller to find out about what happens to Micko and a strange predator in the lagoon. What is in the lagoon that is terrorizing the sharks? Isn-t the shark at the top of the food chain? It is in the book, and I am not going to spoil the read by letting on.

I found the book slow to start but, it was fast paced once I got past the first couple of chapters. I found Barracuda to be a good read and well worth reading. If you like thrillers, Barracuda is the book for you. Mr. Monahan builds the suspense until the time is right to let out the secrets. Do yourself a favor and read this thriller. 4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Scuba Read!, August 6, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book after reading the other reviews because it looked to have some realistic scuba action. Mr. Monahan did not disappoint me. Most of the dive info was right on. I could be real picky on a few things that only someone who has been involved in any type of tech diving would notice but I'll allow some literary license in the interest of a good story, which this definitely was. Some parts of the writing style and dialogue did show a little inexperience but I'm confident his next book will be a little smoother. All in all, worth buying and reading if you like a good mystery mixed in with your scuba diving adventure novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Mean Barracuda, October 13, 2008
By L.C. Evans "Author" (North Carolina, USA) - See all my reviews

Main character Micko, an NYPD detective, goes on vacation. A monster barracuda that kills sharks for sport turns Micko's holiday into one wild adventure. It doesn't help that two sets of warring criminals are trying to kill each other as well as anyone who gets in their way. Fast-paced with lots of action and realistic diving scenes. This is a fun read.
