Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The race to secure the bid for the Summer Games of 2012 is among the most intense in history. Five of the world's most prominent cities have tossed their hat into the ring for the right to host the most prestigious international event in sports. They have consciously chosen to saddle the immense responsibility that comes with a winning bid. It seems that, more than any impending Summer Games, the 2012 bid has garnered substantial media and public attention and scrutiny well before the host city was due to be decided. Never before has the competition been so close and packed with an almost tangible tension. The five cities to make it to the final round have gone to tremendous lengths to prove to the world that their bid is the most worthy. Madrid, Moscow, Paris, London, and New York are battling it out in this battle of metropolises to see who will be the last city standing in this global political, civic, athletic, and financial battle of pride to be known as the 2012 host city. This book aims to condense what is a mountain of numbers and documents diligently presented by each candidate city into information that is slightly simpler to understand for outsiders to give the reader a clearer view into the rather exclusive and often unforgiving world of planning to host the Summer Games. 5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative, January 26, 2006
This book takes a look at the 5 cities which were vying for the 2012 Olympic Bid which eventually went to London. Chetan Dave was very thorough in examining exactly how much effort it takes for a bid committee just to get its proposal on the IOC's table. Everything from the costs of building stadiums, constructing transport infrastructure, obtaining government assistance and more is covered in this book. I personally like to know the little details behind the scenes of a bid and it really gives the reader a nice perspective on the magnitude of such an undertaking. I give it 5 stars just on the amount of research presented.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Learned A Lot, January 28, 2006
This is a fascinating study of the Olympic bidding process, not just the sports themselves. This book included much more than just athletics, so there is a wealth of information on venues, civic planning, finance, Olympic bidding history, accomodations, and security among other aspects. There's a great intro about some cities who experienced heartwrenching near misses at hosting the Games. You get to learn a lot about the sporting history of the 5 cities as well. It really brought the whole event to life for me in a way that I hadn't expected and the details are excellent, drawn from original data from the organizing committees of the 5 bid cities. A hugely informative read, it's for anyone interested in the past and present of the Olympics and what it takes to bid for them and host them.
