About the Author

Ben Britten Smith has been writing software on Apple platforms for 15 years. Most notably he was given an Academy Awardf or Technical Achievement for his feature film work with Mac-based suspended camera control systems. Lately he has switched his efforts from the big screen to the small screen.

His first iPhone game, SnowDude, was published to the App Store a few months after the SDK became available.Since then he has written a dozen apps for various clients including the games: Snowferno, the award winning Mole - A quest for the Terracore Gem, and the Gambook Adventures series of games. Ben lives in Melbourne, Australia with his wife Leonie and their pet bunnies.

Scott Penberthy began coding shortly after the Apple II was launched in the 70’s. His addiction to writing software fully bloomed with a scholarship to MIT, where he wrote a multiplayer online game that brought his school’s antique computer to its knees. After graduating, Scott took a job at IBM Research, the birthplace of IBM’s web products and services. After running up the corporate ladder in the 90’s building massive web sites, he jettisoned in 2005 to return to his true love of coding. Now a successful entrepreneur, Scott runs an app studio in New York City.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of real world project techniques, June 27, 2010
This review is from: More iPhone Cool Projects (Books for Professionals by Professionals) (Paperback)
This book provides a great insight into techniques used to create real world projects. Each chapter is well done and potentially useful depending on your interests. For me, the chapters on Concurrency and Cocos2d were alone worth many times the price of the book. I'm sure I'll come back to the other chapters as I have more relevant projects. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great selection of iPhone cool projects, June 23, 2010
By Andy Zhang "Andy" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: More iPhone Cool Projects (Books for Professionals by Professionals) (Paperback)
This book combines several iPhone projects from various developers into one volume. I found some projects are inspiring and interesting. For example, the Flight Track project by Ben Kazez has some great discussions on external data connection and security. There are several other projects I also liked--Ben Britten Smith's 3D game project using Unity 3D Engine, Chuck Smith's 2D game creation project with Cocos2d framework, Scott Penberthy's OpenGL project showing how to render font smoothly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great intermediate to advanced iPhone game development book!, June 21, 2010
This review is from: More iPhone Cool Projects (Books for Professionals by Professionals) (Paperback)
The book contains a treasure-trove of choice iPhone and iPad game development content: from Unit Testing, building a 3D content pipeline, using Cocos2D, and Computer Vision examples, to game development with Unity3D for the iPhone, and writing your own game engine in C++, for maximum flexiblity... There is plenty to keep me busy during the Summer break, as I fine-tune my own iOS app!
