Preface A biography which takes as its subject a personality from the ancient world generally suffers from the dearth of sources. As far as statemen are concerned, the motives for their actions tend to remain in the dark, while little is known of their private lives. In the case of writers and philosophers, as a rule, the biographer has to make do with a sketchy pattern of isolated facts; otherwise he or she has to resort to a reconstruction of the general historical and cultural background and to an analysis of surviving works. In this respect Cicero forms one of the rare exceptions. For all three dimensions of his life - political events in late Republican Rome, his literary works and his career - evidence is available on an uncommonly large scale, his own and that of others, from contemporary and from later sources.
