Fun read, maybe even helpful!

So, because this is about my 100th name book to own, I have an idea what I like, lol! This review for the third edition published in 2011.

This one is fun for
- the easy-to-find sidebars (Wiccan baby names, Celebrity baby names, how to say it in Irish, etc)
- layout in three dot- separated columns per page
- origins and variations for each name
- of good length (289 pages of names)
- starts with good tips

It's not so good in some regards:
- less contrasty than first edition, so have good lighting!
- lacks pronunciation guides for even difficult names (Jochabed, Isatas, Giada, etc), so keep a tablet nearby
- purely alphabetical format can get tiresome

This book has exceeded our expectations for helping us come up with names for our baby to be. There are plenty of names in this book, and it gives some good background about the meanings of each name.

A lot of name ideas can be found online, but nothing beats cuddling up with you significant other with a book in hand. This book was great value for the money, and will even be helpful for future children.

Overwhelming

This baby name book is fine but I think it has too MANY names in it, which made it hard for my husband to look through when we were in the process of figuring out a baby name. It is very overwhelming to read through all the names in this book and after awhile, they all just start to blend together. I also bought The Baby Name Wizard, Revised 3rd Edition: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby and used it instead. I liked it better because it didn't just focus on the meaning on the name but added some extras like breaking it down into style of name, similar type names, popularity peaks, etc. (check out the book preview to see an example page). I would recommend The Baby Name Wizard, Revised 3rd Edition: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby over "The Everything Baby Names Book" any day of the week!

Everything you need

I love this baby name book. It has the names segregated into boy and girl sections. The meanings and origins of the names are listed. It also tells you if anyone famous had this name. At the back are blank pages for mom and dad to make a list and then a list to come down to the final four or five names. I still haven't chosen my child's name yet, but I am finding this book to be very resourceful and better than some of the apps on my phone. Excellent book.

A nice place to start

Baby Names Book

I bought the last edition of this book for myself a few years ago, and have loved it. Many friends have used it to help them in their search for a baby name. And it's fun to browse. I bought this new edition as a gift for the labor and delivery unit I work on as a nurse (some parents don't have a name picked out yet) and it's come in handy a few times already. I like that it lists the meanings of the names, and country/period of origin. The different lists and trivia are fun, also. I have looked through several other baby names books over the years and the "Everything Baby Names" line has definitely been my favorite.
