Daverat's Wife writing here: This may not be an authorized nor an "official" companion cookbook to the hugely popular TV Series Downton Abbey Seasons 1 & 2 Limited Edition Set - Original UK Version, but what it lacks in Embassy stamps, it more than makes up for in enthusiasm, knowledge, humor and research. The Author, Emily Ansara Baines, and her publishers, go far out of their way to let you know from the beginning that this is only their loving viewers' interpretation of what kinds of dishes could have been expected to ber served by the various characters for various social occasions and meals while specifically distinguishing between the foods of the upper class and the heartier lower class servants' fare that would be cooked for the "help" to eat. Our Author entertains us with her obvious love of the show by playfully presenting each recipe in the social context of the times and to the taste of the various popular characters. She goes to great trouble to inform a reader or a cook new to the time-period on the dining habits and meal expectations of the two vastly different groups of characters - the haves and the have a lot lessers, shall we say.

The author does, however, make modern day substituitions for some ingredients that time would not permit a modern single cook to create on his or her own over the course of several days. Also, in a nod to the new American fans, they give the measurements American-Style, meaning by volume in cups and teaspoons and NOT by weigh in grams or ounces as is the case with most UK cookbooks. For example, they will say you need 4 chicken breasts rather than " X amount weight of white chiken meat on the bone.

I had a hard time trying to rate and review this book. It's a fun little cookbook, yes, but it's affiliation with "Downton Abbey" is totally superficial. There are mentions made of shows and characters with most recipes, but they're more of a hypothetical story of what would have been made and how characters would have enjoyed it, maybe even a blurb about how it was mentioned by a character and then providing a recipe on how to make it. But these write ups are very vanilla, TV Guide-like in their non-plot discussing nature. No specific mentions are made of events, episodes, or show details aside from an occasional mention of what food somebody requested at "one point" in the show, or what they'd have eaten for a variety of hypothetical events. As a result, there's nothing about this that really SCREAMS "Downton Abbey," so fans of the show are likely to be disappointed that all the can find is theoretical modern updates of dishes various characters may or may not have, prepared back in the day.

In fact, true fans would probably be irritated at some of the quips made in the book and their out-of-character portrayals of some of the characters. For example, as much as the Duchess may or may not like truffles, I highly doubt that she knew how to make them. I also deeply doubt that in order to win Matthew over, Mary would have "known how to cook" any particular dish in order to impress him. As anybody who's seen the show knows, the ladies don't cook... They have staff. They don't go to cook, well, anything. And when one of them did, it was quite the mini-scandal.

This cookbook certainly is English inspired, but as for time period authenticity? Well... Let's just say I doubt that Mrs.

Giving it 2 stars because it's not TERRIBLE but it's certainly not great.

I am a HUGE fan of the show and this season I decided to cook along each week.
I have done a little "Downton Abbey Dinners" project and have had some fun.

I wanted so much to love this book and for a few months while it was sitting on the coffee table as I waited for the January premier, I didn't really notice the errors in the recipes. Once I started cooking I noticed that the recipes are poorly written, serving sizes are off and in some cases the recipes are word for word what I have found to be available online. I don't mean mostly the same, I mean WORD FOR WORD the same.

Most of the recipes that I have tried have been pretty good BUT many are missing steps. The steps missing would leave someone relying on the cookbook thinking "Now what?" and then thinking they had done something wrong when the dish didn't turn out properly. I have been able to move on and know what to do but I've said out loud "Um, there are a few steps missing here".

I have also noticed that the serving sizes are WAY off in some of the recipes. Last week I made an appetizer soup and the recipes said "Serves 4". Ummmm yeah... no.
The 4 people being served this appetizer would need to be "Jack & The Beanstalk" sized giants. The soup was good but only serves 4 if you're planning on it being a main dish for 2 days. (it's VERY rich and for my palate needed salt and pepper)

Some recipes are so simple and have worked really well but you will have to think about some of the measurements, because they just don't make sense, and adjust a bit. Of course I made my own personal adjustments but I think most that cook do that.

I write a cooking blog and had planned to give a copy of the book so some blog followers but I just can't. There are too many errors for me to stand behind it.
