4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read for Halloween, October 2, 2009
Frightful Family Tales is a series of four "horror" stories, each with a unique ending.

In the Mortician's Son, you are left shuddering as you get a peek behind the curtains at the practices of one man's dishonesty in a sensitive business ... or was any of it real? You are left wondering ...

Shelly has a BA in Psychology, and is excited to obtain a job at the "Double B Ranch" - supposedly an orphanage for children with behavioral and development problems. But, on her first night, Shelly discovers a horrifying truth ...

Perhaps the most unusual of the stories is "Stranger Beneath the Bed" a tale of a woman who has moved into a house as an uninvited house guest, sleeps under the bed of the owner, and takes over the house when she is away. While humorous in places, it has a surprise twist at the end.

So what is really happening at Shadow Meadows? In "The People of Shadow" you are led into a strange encounter with unusual beings. Are they aliens? Are they ghosts? Why are they there? And, once you encounter them, is there any escape?

As an adult reader, I enjoyed these tales, and the well-drawn characters who lived within them. As a long-time reader of Edgar Allen Poe, I saw a reflection of his style of writing within these stories. You won't lay awake nights shuddering after reading them, but you may check under your bed for a stranger or two.

A good read, if a bit short, and a great effort by a new author.

***I would like to thank the author for permitting me to read a copy of the book so that I could post a review giving my honest opinion. Asking for and hearing the opinions of others is difficult, and I wish her the very best in this book and all future books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written, November 3, 2009
By D. Ayres "RJ" (Tucson, Az) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I thought these tales fell more into the classic horror genre than into the more gory and graphic horror that is more common today. I enjoyed the character development and the well crafted suspense. Since other reviewers have already offered summaries of the stories I will leave that out of my review. But I will say that "The Mortician's son" was my favorite of the four and that "Stranger Beneath the Bed" was not quite as good as the other three.

4.0 out of 5 stars Do not read these stories late at night, October 15, 2009
Donna Leach offers readers four short stories:

The Mortician's Son
In The Mortician's Son the Flying Handyman is hired to do some repair work. Patrick shares some startling family secrets with the repairman. Does his dad really collect bones and sell them. For years the Handyman debates whether or not to call the authorities.

The Double B (Baby song)
Shelley takes a job at an orphanage. The children are very small and very vicious. Once a month they play a game. This month Shelley is the hunted.

Stranger Beneath The Bed
Paula has been hiding under the bed for three days. She is very careful not to be detected. When her Aunt Lily cut off the money she had taken to sleeping in parks but winter was on its way and Paula needed a warmer more comfortable place to stay.

People of Shadow
Adam offered Buck fifty dollars to take him to the Shadow Meadows. Buck had seen the Shadow People with their empty bottomless face. Buck took Adam to an old cabin owned by Pops. There was something odd about Pops, about the way he winked at Buck. Adam is searching for his father and expects to find him in the empty bottomless face.
These four short stories are connected. They are all about the same family. With family like this can you imagine the family reunions? This is not a family you would want to marry into.

There is more than one type of horror. There is classical horror such as Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock. They used suspense and allowed the fear to build. While not everything was logical you could make some form of sense out of it. There is a current trend to produce stories that scare and gross people out without having a true meaning. These stories fall into the latter category.

Do not read these stories late at night when no one else is home or in the woods on a camp out. Warning: leave the lights on.
