LONG awaited new info, complete with translations

I was so pleased to find Infamous Lady. I'd been looking for new information on Countess Bathory's life for years, and could never find what I was looking for. This book delivered and more.
Dr. Craft's writing style makes this easy to understand and wonderful to read, and I was pleased to see that it wasn't another royal biography caught up on European politics. She even included copies of translations she had made of important documents regarding the legal proceedings, an unexplainable resource for anyone looking for something more regarding this whole story.
She also takes the time to assess and debunk any of the myths and legends regarding the Countess according to the information she found (equally infamous Aunt Klara being one of them), and it leaves the reader with the opportunity to decide for themselves how they feel about what happened to the Countess and if the idea that the whole scenario was a political ploy to steal a wealthy widow's land is truth or just another piece of fiction, like the infamous blood baths.

I highly recommend this to anyone who likes biographies, and anyone who has read the other works that have been produced about the Countess and is looking for something more factual than fantasy.

A well-presented biography which holds the interest of both the sophisticated reader and the novice...First-rate!

I consider myself a voracious reader with an appetite for good thrillers and crime dramas. I often read a lot of fiction as I am picky about history and biographies, many of which I often find to be too lengthy and written "over my head". I would avoid books about notorious historical figures because I thought I would lose interest halfway through, until now....Kim Craft's "Infamous Lady" changed all of that! This is truly one of the best book's I've had the pleasure of reading! I heard about this Countess from my granddaughters since they're into the vampire craze that is so popular now, we were watching a TV documentary and Countess Bathory was mentioned in it, all of that murder and torture seemed so outrageous, how could a lady like her be, for all intents and purposes, a crazed serial killer that needed to kill so many girls for their blood in order to stay young looking? I could hardly believe my eyes!! That's when the girls said they heard about Dr. Craft's book "Infamous Lady" and how it told a truer story; they checked it out of the library at first and told their friends, soon it was on a back hold so they asked their mom to purchased it and passed it along to their friends, who absolutely loved it! Needless to say, I was intrigued at how there could be a non-fiction, historical biography /reference book that actually captured the attention of teenagers and that they even learned from it! I had to see for myself and I tell you I was hooked! While some of the material can be a bit graphic and portray some of the cruelty and violence that took place in her court,(it kept me up at night, almost a little hesitant to go to sleep as I worried there might be a chance I would have a nightmare) the book is very well written, engaging, and really quite educational.Read more ›

Good, but was hoping for more professional scholarship

I found the level of historical scholarship to be rather light-weight, and was disappointed by that. There were no notes, no bibliography, no index, and almost half of the book was not the author's own historical work, but was rather reproductions of letters and such. These are interesting, but in the end I was disappointed that the author's original material was quite short and left a lot of questions for me. Perhaps no serious and qualified historically trained scholar/expert has ever dealt with this specific subject at length? I found the book to be interesting an entertaining, but not of the scholarly authority and thoroughness that I was hoping for. For example, I was not satisified with the exploration of potential conspiracy theories. Was she framed? Is it historically feasible that she could have been? Can these theories be confidently dismissed or do they hold some plausibility? Where does the carful academic analysis of the matter leave us? I was left thinking - wait a second, that's it? So, I liked it, I did learn a lot and it is a very interesting subject. I'm simply hoping for a more serious scholar to take it up someday and really treat the subject with more depth and analysis (and then presented in a book that is readable for laymen like myself).

THE book to read on Countess Elizabeth Bathory

Kimberly L. Craft's Infamous Lady shows great premise in that it gathers the most detailed information possible on the Countess and through research and translation gives us what is quite possible the most complete book and source on Elizabeth Bathory. Note that for her book Craft chose to use the countess' Hungarian and birth name Erzsebet instead of the anglicized Elizabeth and she even states at the beginning of the book why she chose to do so. It's without a doubt the most complete book on Bathory and unlike most books this is not a fictional story, but rather about discovering who really was the countess Bathory and why and if she did those atrocities for which she has become a legend and that appealed to me very much. She worked hard to separate the legend from the myth, the number of victims claimed is not as high as it actually was and there was no indication that she ever bathed in blood for instance. She wants to paint an accurate portrait of her as much as possible and I believe it succeeds rather well at doing so. From the first look at the book you can tell that it's an independent, self-published book not that there's anything wrong with that. It's also one of the more scholar works on the Countess you will find.

The content is fantastic for a reader who desires to learn about the Countess Bathory; her tale is fascinating and has been passed down through generations and finally a book delivers on her subject . It goes from the origin of her family, the Bathory name, introduces her parents, siblings and members of her family, the situation in Hungary and Europe, her childhood, her marriage, teenage years, rise to power, her husband Frederick Nadasdy, her children, the events that lead her to commit those atrocities, witnesses, servants...Read more ›

fascinating story
