This is about CULTURE, not raiding and pirating!

Yes, the Vikings had a domestic life, economic life, intellectual life, material life, political life, recreational life
and religious life.

Dr. Kirsten Wolf explains the Viking unfavourables were never more than a small percentage of the total
population.

The appendices beginning with a concise Viking Age Timetable continuing with Endnotes, Glossary and
a superb section devoted to Further Reading makes this book rank with the very best.

The history is real and expertly retold.

Greatly recommended!

OMG I love this book! Ran across it while doing research for my novel set in the Viking era and this book has been critical for current, cohesive information. While it’s not an exhaustive account, it’s certainly a great quick reference and terrific jumping off point. If you’re looking for a good account of what went on in the down time between raiding abbeys and terrorizing Europe, this book covers the basics of the domestic, intellectual, religious, political, etc, spheres of life as experienced by the people known as Vikings. Very readable with great layout and some very nice pictures. This book will spend a long life on my research/ reference shelf.

"The Viking Age: Everyday Life During the Extraordinary Era of the Norsemen" was a tedious read. From my perspective the book seemed to be a collection of facts and anecdotes without them being woven together well. This lack of a clear flow is what challenges the reader. The readability of the book would have been enhanced if more history or context had been provided to better understand the how and why of these pieces of information. The book is divided into seven sections, e.g., domestic life, religious life, which is a reasonable organization. There were many interesting facts in the book, e.g., how King Harald Bluetooth, for whom the Bluetooth wireless technology is named, brought all of Denmark together, and brought Christianity to Denmark. It was also interesting to read how the Viking Age ended in England in 1066. King Harold Godwinsson of England surprised King Harald Hardruler of Norway near York. Kind Hardruler was killed during the battle. Then two days later William the Conqueror killed King Harold Godwinsson. I had not realized how close in time these two events were. There might have been more analysis of what effect one event may have had on the other or what caused the two events to be so close in time.

The basis for an excellent book exists within the information contained within the book. However, for the reader to gain the maximum advantage of the information, the text should be rewritten with the assistance of a good editor. Then the "Viking Age" would be more comprehensible and engaging for a general audience.

This is a fun book that is chock-full of informative facts. I already knew my fair share about the vikings, and this really helped round them out as real people with real problems. (Well, it's pretty obvious that living a thousand years ago constituted "real problems.")

I was astonished that the book cost only $11. Even with Amazon's generous discounts, I asked myself, how can that be? Well, here's why it be: the book is cheaply produced in a small, non-glamorous format on cheap paper. I was really looking forward (perhaps foolishly, given the $11 price tag) to a glorious oversized volume with nice pictures on glossy paper. I instead received an undersized volume with nice pictures on potato peels. O.K., I do exaggerate slightly.

But the book was still lots of fun. And here's another thing for you to learn: never begin a paragraph with "but."

A little hokey in places - like pictures of Vikings with horns on their helmets. Overall good though. I especially liked the information on religion. One big drawback is the lack of decent maps.
