I am returning this book for a refund after reading the first chapter.

It is riddled with typos and glaring factual errors.

For some reason, he feels compelled to begin his account of "Hirohito's War" with the US Declaration of Independence, and duly attempts to recount all of world history from the late 18th century up through the 1930's. The Trail of Tears, the Second Schleswig War (1864), the Armenian genocide of WWI and First and Second Balkan wars of 1912-13, among other irrelevancies, all get their mention in the rambling and totally unfocused first chapter.

In describing the outbreak of WWI, he tells us:

quote:
"Ultimately it was Germany's invasion of neutral Belgium, required by the von Schlieffen Plan's attempt to outflank France's defensive Maginot Line, that triggered Britain's guarantee of protection for Belgium signed in 1839 at the Treaty of London."

That's right, according to the author, the 1914 Schlieffen Plan was an attempt to outflank the *Maginot Line*, which wouldn't exist for another 15 years, and was built (in the 1930's) on territory that Germany controlled in 1914...

A high-school history student would know that the quoted sentence is absolute nonsense. This is John Belushi level stuff ("Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?!")

Another glaring factual error occurs shortly afterward, when he says that Wilson made his "14 Points Declaration" in the speech when he landed in Europe for the Versailles conference (which would have been in 1919). In fact, the 14 Points were proposed in an address to a joint session of Congress, in January 1918, a year before Wilson went to Europe.

If the author insists on burdening us with irrelevancies, he might at least try to get his facts right.

Based on the first chapter, this seems more like a bad term paper by a C-student than a professional work of history.

A well research book but many portions are covered by stand alone books which handle subject matter in more depth.
The lack of maps is absolutely inexcusable in a military history book.
On line option is absolutely ridiculous.

This book has some major problems. First of all, the edition is not very good. There are several typos and errors that could have been easily corrected by an attentive editor. Second, the lack of maps is annoying. I know that the maps are free of charge as online resource, but it makes difficult to consult them if it happens that you have not a computer at hand. Third, the writing style is too repetitive, even to the point that some paragraphs repeat almost word by word in different parts of the book. Fourth, I hate, really, really hate, the constant, almost abusive, use of cursives in the text. It is distracting. Fifth, a book with academic pretensions must include the notes and bibliography in the book itself, not as online resources. I don't want to have to check my computer every time I find a footnote I think interesting.

The book is not without strengths, though. It is informative and comprehensive. As a single volume narrative analysis of the Pacific's War it's OK.

I have not yet gotten far enough into the text honestly to rate this book (it only arrived yesterday) but a quick - and then detailed - perusal revealed many references to maps, and a two-page (xxv-xxix) list of maps, diagrams, etc. BUT the maps and diagrams are available only on the Author's Web-Site (francispike.org) in an assortment that is as yet a "work in progress" (for instance, there is no map or diagram of Edson's Ridge though it appears in "Map 16.01" on the list in the text).. Maps available on that web-site are for the most part simple line drawings, generally lacking in detail and disappointing in that regard. When I purchased this book I had no idea that I would find it necessary to have the heavy tome in my lap so I could refer to the geography on my desk-top machine.

I will not be returning the book, for the list of chapters is quite inclusive of all of the major events od the Pacific War, but want to warn future purchasers that this big, heavy (1110 + xli pages!) book contains, as delivered from amazon, nary a map diagram or reference list.

ADDENDUM 13JUL15 I have begun actually to read this book, and must say that it touches on virtually all of the significant events of the Pacific War, and that, for many of these, gives useful (and sometimes new) historical background. The writing is clear and succinct, and makes reading into the many pages of the text a pleasure. Nonetheless, I miss the maps: as I correlated the maps in the authors incomplete online list with those in histories and atlases that I own, I was struck by the general inadequacy of the on-line drawings relative to other maps in my library.

I must agree with other reviewers that the lack of printed maps is difficult to excuse in a serious historical work, but since the entire world of publishing is being shaken to its foundations in the transition to digital format, the hybrid format might be given a pass--for now. If the website with the maps disappears, the book becomes much less useful. Regarding the book itself, intelligent editing seems to have been non-existent. It is a truly comprehensive work, and the author clearly expresses his biases. I wish the book had been published as two volumes because the single volume is difficult to handle.
