One seldom talks about "devouring" a book of more than 600 pages, but my reading of Eileen Powers' Medieval English Nunneries was, for this cultural historian, a full and satisfying meal. The book deserves its status as both one of the earliest (first published in the 1920s) and (to date) unequaled studies of English women's monastic houses in the Middle Ages. Every aspect of nuns' lives, from food and drink to clothing to recreation to art, is exhaustively explored. My research into European female monasticism has been ongoing for several years and has involved the reading of dozens of books and scores of articles, but - taken collectively - the readings were not as valuable as this one volume. That Powers' writing is clear, comprehensible, and amusing is an added virtue, and if the book has one slightly irritating vice it is one common to its epoch: the failure of the author to offer translations of quoted passages (sometimes lengthy) in Old English, Old French, and Latin. The motivated reader will find ways to cope with that and, in any case, the quotes - even if as obscure as Babel - do not affect the flow and meaning of the text.

Power's work has set the tone and prepared the ground for future scholars and admirers of English nunneries. The debt owed to her is immense. She offers an "interdisciplinary" examination of medieval religious women and their world as well as the laws and social mechanisms which influenced and were influenced by them. Although recent scholarship has corrected some of her assertions, Eileen Power remains the standard work in the field.

This is a history of nunneries - any sex is about old church practices - not heavy breathing. It tells readers how women came to be in nunneries - sometimes by choice, sometimes not. Relates their lives in the cloisters - everyday living, hardships, family ties (often several women from one family would be in the same nunnery). Well-researched and presented. Truly conveys the time and treatment of women - you could be willed to the
Church, given to the Church as a young child, or take the veil if widowed - which was often preferable to another marriage to someone your family chose. Women's rights really have come a long way. I read this book in the evenings when I need something not too rip-roaring or nightmare producing - interesting but not exciting. The subject matter is certainly not for everyone.

First published in 1922, this book is rich in well-researched details that will bring the medieval nunnery to life. Scratch the surface of a habit and you'll find a very human woman. Medieval English Nunneries is an entertaining and enlightening read. I read a library copy then had to buy it for my collection. I am pleased it's still in print.

Lots of in depth info. This would be great for researchers. I'm enjoying it but it's a bit dry in places. Overall, a nice body of work for those who want real details.
