Peter Mattis provides a well-written and valuable guide for all China analysts, not just those focused on military matters. For example, he summarizes how scholars assess mainland Chinese sources, clarifying the difference between the often shrill pronouncements of the Global Times versus those from other more sober voices. Further, he provides a thorough review of current works on China and their authors, in both English and Chinese, with appendices that are well worth having as reference. Beginners looking at China and more seasoned specialists will all find this work by Mattis to be valuable and timely.

This is definitely the go-to book for any China analyst, whether aspiring or experienced. It gives a great list of sources to gather research from and helps the reader to understand what constitutes as "good analysis." The beginning of the book guides aspiring China analysts to resources that are necessary for the basic understanding of how to analyse China, which also doubles as a refresher for experienced analysts. It also discusses various papers and books from the past and present that the author considers well written, but doesn't fail to name the shortcomings, if he sees any. Overall, this book is full of information that can help anyone begin or guide their China research and analysis.

As someone who works on this stuff for a living, I've found myself going back to this book again and again even though I've only had it for a month or so. Mattis has written an absolutely indispensable book for anyone who's interested in gaining a specialist's understanding of the PLA, and it happens to double as a perfect go-to reference book for non-specialists wishing to elevate their discussions of China beyond mere "Xi Jinping said ______ today" parroting.

Everyone whose work touches on Chinese national security issues in some capacity -- journalists, government analysts, think-tankers, curious college students -- can benefit immensely from this book. As someone who's looking at these issues day in and day out (albeit as a junior grunt), I've just plain *learned* a ton from it, since the PLA is such a massive topic that few among us can keep up to date on everything. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
