I have mixed emotions about this book

OK, it would be easy to make cracks about USA Today and comparing this to a "real" book. But I went into it knowing what it was, so I can't be too snide.

The pictorial, quick reading format could be good for getting a kid interested in history. With luck, they might follow this by reading a "real" book. For what it is, it's generally well done. But I have some issues with it.

To being with, it tries too hard to be funny. There are too many jokes, and some fall flat. And I just don't find jokes about the plague funny.

The book asserts that Vikings "helped found" Kiev in "Russia". Leaving aside that there were already people there when the Vikings arrived, Kiev was not then in Russia, and is not today in Russia. In a nod to political correctness, the book names some women who were Knights. I'm all for opportunities for women. But the Medieval Era was not a time of opportunities for women, and a few fabled examples does not change that. There was no realistic opportunity for a woman to become a Knight.

This is more a fun diversion than a serious book.

Middle Ages...because it took ages and it's in the middle...

Wow! This book is just as fun as it is informative. I loved the infographics...no dry historical facts here.

I have boys in my class who balk at reading stories but can totally immerse themselves in any non-fiction with pictures and facts. They will be thrilled with this one.

The author is very learned in this subject. He made the subject matter very interesting for readers in the age group.
The illustrator was well chosen and also did a very fine job.
