Product Description

As the divorce rate among Latter-day Saints continues to grow, couples who are struggling must face difficult questions: Do we make things work, or do we move on? In Latter-day Divorce and Beyond, practicing therapist Jennifer James offers direction, guidance, and comfort through the agonizing process of moving on. She gives advice on everything from the twenty-first century dating game to the challenge of forgiveness. Having gone through a divorce of her own twenty years after being married in the temple, Jennifer provides an understanding perspective on what it means to be divorced and LDS. Through it all, she encourages readers to stay active in the Church.

About the Author

Born in Detroit and raised in San Francisco, Jennifer is an only child, a convert to the LDS Church at age seventeen, and considers the gospel to be one of the saving graces in her life. Twice divorced and the mother of three beautiful daughters, Jennifer has been single nearly four years, after her 20-year temple marriage ended in divorce. At twenty-one, she earned her bachelors degree in broadcast journalism from BYU. Her first love since childhood was music and within three weeks of graduation from university had joined the world-renown singing group The Mike Curb Congregation and traveled for nearly three years with them as an opening act for Sammy Davis Jr., Johnny Mathis, Carol Channing, Bob Hope, and others. This detour in life exposed her to recording contracts with Warner-Curb, MGM, and Word Records and was posed to cut her first single when she married the first time. Jennifer has performed for many celebrities and government officials, including President Ronald Reagan. Her pastimes include having great fun and adventures with her children whom she considers her greatest treasure, playing piano and guitar (self-taught), singing, dancing, rock and Irish folk music, mediaeval and ancient history research, genealogy, crochet, racquetball, volleyball, and watching rugby (she supports the Irish team at Lansdowne in Dublin). She also has a great love of animals in all shapes and sizes. With a passionate and intense personality, Jennifer is considered unconventional by her peers, as well as an incurable anglophile who loves the ocean, forests, riding horseback, dirt bikes, watching Jackie Chan movies, Bugs Bunny cartoons, Seinfeld, and Monty Python. She loves to laugh, is a self-described "handful," and hates being considered or having to act as an "adult." She's actively participated as a leader in Girl Scouting for many years. Jennifer’s professional aspiration is to help other divorcees, single parents, blended families and others emotionally heal and find their way so that they can create healthy relationships out of the ashes and chaos of former dysfunctional marriages. As a budding researcher and therapist, Jennifer teaches relationship seminars based on her best-selling book and graduated with her Master’s degree in Social Work in April 2005. Privately, Jennifer continues to seek for her soul-mate and is preparing for that eventual union.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Positive Influence, August 30, 2007
By Phyllis Meadows (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ms. James hits the nail right on the head with her direct and somewhat humorous insight into the reality of divorce within the LDS world. She described almost word for word what I have been feeling for the past 3 years since my divorce.
Her book helped me to finally get the closure I needed, to look at myself in the mirror and take responsibility for my own faults, and it helped me to find the motivation to move forward. I highly recommend this book to anyone who might be going through or has experienced a divorce. It is a most positive influence for good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Between the secular and the spiritual, October 23, 2007
This book manages to meld the secular and the spiritual parts of a divorce and the subsequent attempts to get back into the dating and mating game. It has a great deal of relevance to any LDS who are divorced or even contemplating divorce. It is a guide through the minefields of dating and finding an eternal partner. Ms. James takes the reader gently by the hand and shows where the pitfalls and the pratfalls are, then guides the reader to where the road runs true. This book constantly seeks to use biblical references to illustrate the path and shows how one can still lead a proper and spiritual life even in the midst of the pain and anguish of divorce. I had thought that the natural end to divorce was to move away from your faith. Ms. James shows how to use the lessons that could be gained there to become closer to God.

2.0 out of 5 stars Catharsis for the author..., July 8, 2007
I found the book to be moderately insightful if the reader has never been single for too long in their twenties and finds themselves alone in their forties or fifties. That being said, I felt the overall tone to be negative and fearful of all the things one goes through after divorce. These things have been covered, ad-nauseam, in other "so now you are divorcing" books aimed at unendowed terrestial and telestial candidates. I was expecting a book aimed more for an individual that is going through a harrowing traumatic emotional and spiritual experience and how one deals with these issues through spirituallity and celestial growth by relying upon the grace of the Savior and the help of the Spirit of the Holy Ghost. I would have thought that there should be more upliftment and positive tone of hope reflective of the Brethern and of the Church of Jesus Christ. Divorce is a time a Latter-day Saint reflects upon and re-evaluates their relationship, not with their "ex", but with their Father in Heaven.
In the end, I felt that the reader might be setting himself or herself up for another go-around of the mating maze having learned nothing of a Celestial nature, except, how to "get through" this experience at a terrestrial level. Maybe because the author herself has nothing to offer at this higher degree of spirituality. I would suggest to her, to read, fast, ponder and pray about the Sermon on the Mount in the New Testament, and then apply this to the same subject matter she tried to cover in this book and come up with a "volume 2" followup. We weren't put on this earth to just "survive" in singlehood or marriage, but to learn and grow so that we, one day, emulate the personality and character of God.
