This is a review of the KINDLE version of The Elements: A Visual Exploration... The Kindle version DOES contain the photographs, charts and illustrations . Done beautifully. You may think this a silly point, but many Kindle books do not contain these when the print version's total value is diminished in the translation to e-book. Good job, Amazon.

Being a reference book Theodore Gray's "The Elements" is not something I would read cover to cover. Instead I read it piecemeal; as I needed information on a particular subject I would go to the element ( or elements ) that I was interested in and generally got what I was looking for. As a basic reference the book fills it's niche admirably. The authors writing is clear and concise with just a touch of humor. Amply illustrated with numerous photos, by the author and Nick Mann, the reader is treated with glimpses of each element; where you find it, what it looks like in it's natural state and how it's used by society. The book opens with an introduction to the Periodic Table, it's history and why it's arranged the way it is. With each element's segment from the PT you will learn that element's atomic number, it's atomic weight, its density, it's radius, it's crystal structure and other vital information that you may need. The essays that accompany each element give you a brief history of when and how it was discovered as well as an overview of how mankind uses that element. Their arrangement in numerical order by atomic number makes finding each one easy. The book closes with a look at the elements over #100, how the got their names and what little is known about them. While "The Elements" is not an in depth treatment of the subject it does offer a quick reference that can get you started on whatever project you're working on and lead you on to more advanced works. The hard bound edition would look good on any coffee table and make for some stimulating conversations. The Kindle edition, that I read on my iPad, had no technical or formatting issues and the illustrations looked good. All in all this was a worthwhile purchase and one that should come in handy from time to time.

The Elements is a photographic tour de force of items from Theo Gray's personal collection of element samples. If he were to put on a museum show or do a PBS series, this would be the companion book.

It is a beautiful book, with excellent photography and very high resolution printing on a semi-matte black paper which gives the pictures a floating-in-space quality. About my only gripe is that this is the sort of paper that tends to absorb oil from your fingers and acquire permanent fingerprints, so one has to take a bit of care to keep it looking nice.

The bulk of the book consists of a two-page spread for each of elements 1 through 100. The left hand side of each spread will be a full-page image, typically of the element in its native mineral or a refined form, or some object constructed of the material etc. The right hand page contains a few paragraphs of interesting information/trivia about the element, as well as several images of items from the author's collection of objects made of, containing, or otherwise related to it.

For each there are also some pertinent facts such as its position in the periodic table, and diagrams of the atomic emission spectrum, the melting and boiling points, electron order filling, crystal structure, and some basic numerical facts of atomic weight, density, and radius.

There's also some introductory material and additional discussion of elements 101-118.

This is not a formal reference work in any sense. It's a picture book along with interesting trivia and information. But it is also a fabulously entertaining tour of the elements that make up our world, and it's an absolute joy to curl up with and browse through. A very satisfying thing to possess.

The author has some very strong opinions on politics and people's personal choices (such as the comments on metal used for piercing jewelry), but that aside. I can overlook that easy enough. But to me, the author really seems to get lazy as the book goes on. The info on the earlier elements is very detailed and informative. As you get into the higher numbers, it's a lot of "this only exists in a lab, there's no use for it, by the way, did I tell you about my........"

Overall, a great book, worth it for the pictures alone.

A fabulous, beautiful and very interesting book. Short, information-packed essays, and lots of wonderful photos. It kept my interest, and encouraged me to "look further". I have the physical book and the Kindle book. Love it. Highly recommend.

Much better deal on these from Amazon than from Scholastic's Book Fair (half the price!). I have this silly goal that my eight year old will learn these, as his brother is a chemistry major and thought the two of them could be science buddies. So far, he hasn't picked it up, but I have. It's laid out well, probably more of a 5 or 6 grade level, but gorgeous pictures and illustrations.
