Product Description
Because no one knows how acupuncture first began, it's no wonder that Americans tend to be skeptical about the practice. But as difficult as it may be for many to believe, acupuncture has the potential to be an effective form of therapy in virtually every area of medicine. A well-trained acupuncturist can treat a wider variety of patients than practically any other type of healthcare professional. In his new book, The Healing Power of Acupressure and Acupuncture: A Complete Guide to Timeless Traditions and Modern Practice, renowned acupuncturist Matthew D. Bauer delves into the roots of acupuncture to offer the first comprehensive theory about the genesis of Chinese medicine, and offers practical information on how to obtain the most help from this ancient healing system.

Adopting a unique and essential three-tiered approach, The Healing Power of Acupressure and Acupuncture covers the development of acupressure and acupuncture under the Eastern methods of science, describes simple acupressure methods that readers can employ on themselves, and explains how acupuncture's ability to stimulate self-healing, used alone or with Western therapies, can help cure dozens of health problems—many of which modern medicine alone is powerless to help!

Readers will learn how to: · Effectively treat migraines, lower pack pain, asthma, allergies, stress, and more · Find the right practitioner · Balance their qi

Acupuncture is based on the theory that there is an invisible force or energy in nature that the Chinese call qi. In a manner similar to blood circulation, qi flows to each cell via a complex network of pathways usually called "channels" or "meridians." If qi gets stuck, it causes an imbalance as upstream cells are flooded with too much qi and downstream cells receive too little. Acupuncture points are those spots where qi has the greatest tendency to get stuck; hence stimulating them with needles (acupuncture) or finger pressure (acupressure) helps free stuck qi and restore normal circulation. Once normal qi circulation is restored, the cells eventually return to their normal, healthy state.

About the Author
Matthew D. Bauer, a Licensed Acupuncturist, herbalist, and qi-gong healer, studied Taoist philosophy with a 74th generation Taoist master. In investigating the roots of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, he also explores profound questions regarding issues of spirituality and the evolution of the human condition. Bauer has been in private practice for 19 years and writes a regular column for Acupuncture Today. He received an honorary Ph.D. in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Yuin University. Bauer maintains a practice at La Verne Acupuncture in La Verne California.

"I wrote this book out of frustration that millions of people who could be helped by this simple, cost-effective healing system were not taking advantage of it because they knew so little about and it seems so bizarre. Acupuncture is a safe, simple, method of healing that can ease pain and suffering and literally save lives." Bauer states, "I am convinced that the more we learn about the roots of acupuncture and acupressure, the better we will understand how to help ease pain and suffering today and in the future."

WHEN I FIRST BEGAN MY STUDIES of Taoism, I came face-to-face with a manner of thinking every bit as sure of itself as modern Western thought, yet so different that I readily understood why Kipling was sure "never the twain shall meet" Like everyone I'd ever known, I had spent my life accepting the concept that doctors took care of our bodies by ordering x-rays and lab tests, prescribing drugs, and performing surgery, while religions dealt with matters of the spirit. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, January 21, 2006
The author begins with a clear and unbiased explanation of the underlying differences between Western and Eastern Medicine. Within this context, he explains how and why acupuncture works using non-technical terms that any layman can understand.

The book includes clear examples of types of illness that are best treated within the Western biomedical model and those that are more effectively treated using Chinese Medicine (rather than opinion, his information rests on the NIH Consensus study of Acupuncture Effectiveness)

Part Three of the book gives many helpful Self Care instructions and explains the points that one can safely use acupressure on oneself and others to treat a variety of conditions.

An excellent resource for anybody interested in Acupuncture or the Oriental Healing Arts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine 101, July 26, 2005
This easy to understand, unbiased explanation of acupuncture, acupressure, and Chinese medical philosophy helps fill one of the missing links in our understanding of health and disease. It not only offers the reader a fascinating view of Chinese medicine, but provides self-help acupressure techniques from a practitioner who obviously knows his stuff. I enjoyed reading it and think every one interested in this field of medicine and self care can greatly benefit from reading it as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone interested in Chinese medicine, March 3, 2005
Matt Bauer's `Healing Power of Acupressure and Acupuncture', is wonderfully well written book. It traces the roots of Chinese medicine in a simplistic and natural way from ancient China through to the modern Western mechanical world. The core theories of Chinese medicine are excellently explained in a rich simplistic detail that opens up these powerful universal concepts to all that are willing to read and understand them. These powerful insights come from a very experienced healer and have been passed down through millennium by oral tradition and now become available, at long last, in printed form.

Honest advice is given about the differences between Western biomedical medicine and Chinese medicine, allowing the reader the power of knowledge to make up their own minds about what's right for them. It also goes on to explain what's involved in a typical Chinese medicine treatment and how you can go about finding the right practitioner for you.

A real must read for all, from beginners through to Chinese medicine practitioners. It will have anyone that's every wondered about Chinese medicine entranced.
