In Love Sucks, Ken Shakin skips the apple and goes right for the core. Sex is not the main focus of these stories, just a thread with which to weave the reportage. Human relations in the big city is the subject of this collection of what can only be called weird fiction. The book is catagorized as erotica, but the thrust of the narrative is literary, not purely erotic. New York can be a very weird place. Especially if you're gay and looking for love and sex in all the wrong places. One of the weirdest stories is "One Bitch's Story," about a heterosexual woman, a musician who is only appreciated for her very large breasts, how the nice girl from out of town slowly turns into a New York bitch. Depressing stuff, but the right amount of humour keeps the reader turning the pages. I read another Shakin book, the novel Grandma Gets Laid, and enjoyed it too. But this one is brisker. And now that I'm living in New York, I thought I should take a bite out of the apple, if not the core.

The Dark Side of New York

If you love twists and turns, Ken Shakin's "Love Sucks" is a book that you do not want to miss. It is a collection of stories about the seamy side of New York. It strips the glitz and the glitter away to show a New York that writhes. I felt like I was out for a night on the town in the sleaziest city ever. Shakin, himself, is the main character and he goes after the relations in the city. This is not just the Big Apple--this is the core of the apple. The book contains some of the strangest fiction I have ever read and I do not mean that in a negative way. It is, I suppose, what we may call narrative erotica and it is beautifully written. I sat up as I read and was totally immersed in it and mesmerized by it. This is a book that you will not easily forget.
