Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Horror author Rick R. Reed's first collection of short stories presents ten of his best--and scariest--tales. Nine of the ten stories have appeared previously in such acclaimed anthologies as The Crow: Shattered Lives and Broken Dreams and the one new story "Meat Mallet" introduces readers to a very gruesome chef, who is hungry for more than love. From the macabre to the surreal to the all-too-real, these stories convey both the despair and hope of the human condition, while at the same time providing sleep-with-lights-on nightmare chills.

From the Publisher
Includes the following stories: "Crime Scene," "The Man in Milwaukee," "On Line," "Epiphany," "Meat Mallet," "Morbidly Obese," "Speed Freak," "How Do I Love Thee?" "Tool of Enslavement," and "Moving Toward the Light."

4.0 out of 5 stars The name definately fits!!, April 22, 2007
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (3/07)

Twisted" is a collection of short stories. In Rick R. Reed's first story, "Crime Scene," his character thinks, "...there was that morbid curiosity thing: that stopping to look at accidents on the highway compulsion from which we all suffer." This statement applied to me in regards to reading "Twisted." I would start a story and then feel really uncomfortable about the depravity of what was happening in the plot, yet I would keep reading, getting more and more unsettled. This reminds me of being on a scary rollercoaster ride: I will be terrified and uncomfortable, relieved when it is over, yet get back on and ride it again. Then, I think, why am I doing this? I found that I couldn't put this book down.

The author uses both human and inhumane characters in "Twisted." Some of the human characters had no sense of humanity within themselves. Reed takes you into their minds, and makes you feel like you are a part of what they are involved in, whether you like it or not. The vampire characters he uses are also very entertaining. I enjoyed the twists and turns that Reed throws into the plots to leave the reader off guard.

If you enjoy unsettling horror stories, then "Twisted" is definitely the book for you. I would not recommend this book for children, just adults. I do recommend this book. It will take you for a ride!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pure ADRENALINE RUSH from Beginning to End!, July 16, 2006
I had not read a collection of horror stories in a long time. In fact, I don't care to even watch horror movies the way I used to - just too much real-life misery in the world. However, prompted by curiosity regarding the talents of a fellow writer, I started reading Mr. Reed's novel and ended up being reminded of how much enjoyment there is in reading a tale that offers a near perfect escape from the mundane concerns of everyday life. The stories that resonate strongly involve a woman who searches for love in the VERY WRONG place and a tale of love and obsession involving a twisted group of Vampires. I think Mr. Reed displays a brilliant talent for conveying the intensity of love - and offers a very fresh perspective on the emotional complexities involved. A few of the stories took a few pages to really get rolling - but overall, Mr. Reed does an excellent job at presenting the true diversity to be found in even the most horrific of relationships.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Bizzarre Collection/Compulsively Readable, June 23, 2006
If you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary, this collection of "horror" stories is for you. Although you'll find some of the usual suspects here (particularly vampires), Reed's horror is more of the stuff real-life nightmares are made of: a closeted gay man with an unusual empathy for Jeffrey Dahmer upon his arrest; a unique interpretation behind the motive for Lizzie Borden's infamous crimes; a rape victim finds help and vengeance from beyond the grave; a demented cook with a real taste for young men... There's a lot here, some of it nightmare-inducing, some of it laugh out loud funny (a 300-lb. vampire finds love in all the wrong places), but it's always a can't-put-down type of read...and one that leaves you thinking.
