I am really amazed that this book has gotten so many positive reviews. Perhaps I am not the kind of reader that this book is aimed at or her style of writing is not my cup of tea. First, I had already read a book by one of the authors she mentions repeatedly in the book, Kristin Neff, before reading Brene Brown's book so many of the ideas in the book were not new to me. Also, Kristin Neff's book is better researched and written in a more honest and sophisticated style. Second, some of what Brene Brown's writes about comes from Buddhism and mindfulness, and I have read about and practiced these philosophies, so again what she writes about is not groundbreaking or anything new. You can get better information in books by Pedma Chodron, Sharon Salzberg, and others like them on the same topic. There was maybe 5% of my kindle book that really inspired me. Another reason this book was not for me is that she says that you need to believe in a higher power in order to become a wholehearted person. My rational brain just doesn't. Other people might not have a problem with this. Moreover, I think my issues are too great for what Brene describes in her book. She uses herself as the example throughout the book of someone who is a perfectionist, but the problems she describes of herself seem so minor that I just can't relate--someone criticized her picture and she once gave a bad presentation. I also wanted to know how to become less of a perfectionist and to learn to accept my imperfections and stop worrying about what others think of me, but I just didn't learn how to do these things from this book. I learned that I am really not good enough to be who this book is written for. Finally, I was turned off by her jingoistic rhetoric such as her 3 Cs: courage, compassion, and connection.Read more ›

“Self-Help” books are endemic. Most of us want to improve some part of our life on an ongoing basis thus “How To” books abound – “Lose Weight Easily,” “Change Your Life in 30 Days,” “How Better Friends in Can Make You Rich!” – titles that intrigue and hook into our hope that “it will be better, then!” Rarely does a book come from an outlook of “this is how I changed my life, maybe it will be of help to you,” yet that is the style and tone offered by Dr. Brown in this well researched (she is a professional researcher), concise book whose writing is more prose than technical. The book deserves to be read slowly enough so the practical suggestions can take root beyond the, “Oh, that’s interesting!” phase, but could easily be read through in a weekend.
Dr. Brown is clear in her writing that people and things only change when the work is done to make those changes. The “Sub-Sub-Title of the book is “Your Guide To a Wholehearted Life” and is the result of her having experienced a “Breakdown Spiritual Awakening” (her description) in 2007. She defines Wholeheartedness “is as much about embracing our tenderness and vulnerability as it is about developing knowledge and claiming power.” (p.xi). Because she choose to grasp this time period as moment of awakening rather than a time of grief, she frames the “steps” to living Wholeheartedly as “Guideposts,” framing the tasks more as a guided journey than a “Fix It Fast” guarantee.

The Gifts of Imperfection is a well written, thoroughly researched, compassionate must read book from the perspective of a seasoned and trustworthy professional, which contains a plethora of concrete information about how to live more genuinely and capably in the face of fear and self-doubt.Brene’ Brown writes her guide to achieving self-acceptance, self-esteem and well-rounded living, by focusing on her years of research on shame, fear, and vulnerability, providing the reader with specific ways people think and act that either challenge or welcome the topics. She highlights both hindrances and aids to living fully in ten guideposts or chapters, in which she explains ways people can use the information she’s learned from her research to let go of negative thoughts and emotions and let in the things that provide joy and contentment. The author’s ability to communicate, her status as an empathetic peer, and knowledge as a practiced researcher and social worker, shine through her writing, expertly bringing together her writing style and the useful information she imparts.

Brown writes intelligently and from the heart about the findings of her decade long research, providing personal anecdotes to frame the information, which humanizes her ideas, making the research less scientific and more relatable and applicable for the reader. The author tells the story of her own journey of curiosity, exploration, and growth which develops alongside her shame research. Brown tells about using her data to assemble a “do” and “don’t” list for feeding shame, fear, and vulnerability, and realizing, “This is just great, I’m living straight down the s*** list.
