Lego Maniac? Want to learn a little bit about British history? Check and check - this book is for you. This is first and foremost a history book, written in a simple easy to read style. It doesn't get bogged down in a dry details, but paints broad brushstrokes for the medieval period in England.

This is not a Lego building or plans book. It serves as inspiration. People that love to build Legos built different scenes for each section of the book. Some of these scenes are really complicated and beautiful. I'd love to see the models in person. The remarkable part, each builder took their own pictures and there is a consistency of view and lighting throughout the book.

The text is incredibly well written. A number of English history scholars wrote essays. Somehow the essays ended up with a common tone. It was as if only one person wrote the whole book.

The paper is thick and the book is expertly bound. The photographs are reproduced beautifully. My only minor complaint is the text layout - the spacing between paragraphs is too wide, making it look like the essays are divided across the page.

These are remarkable Lego models accompanied with well written English history.

I didn't really know what to expect from this book. My 8 year old told me that he desperately desired to own it, and I indulged him. We have a number of big coffee table style Lego books and I as expecting it to be similar - I was wrong! This is not an oversized book, it is on the smaller side. It has a number of historically significant events with nicely done little Lego illustration spreads next to them. My son is quite engrossed in reading the history AND soaking in the gorgeous pictures, and I call that a win. Very enjoyable little book.

Medieval Lego is a fantastic book on two levels.

First, it is visually very impressive. The large, full color photos of Lego scenes are so much fun to look at. It's really impressive how creative the author is in recreating each story in Lego form. Each time I look at this book, I see something new. My 10 year old is a huge Lego fan and is a very talented builder himself. Even though there aren't instructions for building these scenes, my son has a knack for figuring out how to recreate elements that appeal to him. I love that we can all enjoy the Lego scenes in this book while my little Lego fan is able to take an even deeper appreciation of it. You can see the wheels turning when he looks through Medieval Lego and know he is planning his next build.

Second, the stories here are really interesting and appeal to a wide age range. They are all well written (by a variety of historical experts) and accessible for all of us, kids and adults. My 16 year old enjoys history and is familiar with more historical details than you'd expect, but she still found a lot of new things in this book. We've had a really good time reading the stories, which cover quite a large time period but are only a couple of pages each.

Whether you appreciate history or Lego or both, Medieval Lego is a delight.

This is a really cool book. It's a wonderful combination of words and pictures...famous events from medieval history, such as the Battle of Hastings and the Magna Carta, are described in words and illustrated in amazing Lego tableaux. It's got a beautiful form factor, not too big.

I had originally ordered this book to read to my 7-year old grandson. Having read the book, I've decided to hold off until he is older. I've always been amazed at his ability to memorize all the characters in his Lego sets, and all the Star Wars characters (even though he's never seen one of the movies). I thought this book would marry his interest in Legos with real history. The concept of relating Lego figures to historical characters is intriguing. However, this book doesn't quite carry that idea out. The Lego scenes are well-constructed by builders from around the world, but they don't add much to the text, which is written by several scholars of medieval history. The scholastic content varies, some being very interesting, while others are too simplistic and hard to grasp. I just don't see the text grabbing the interest of my grandson at his young age.

The book covers topics beginning with William the Conqueror and the Norman Conquest (1066) to Henry the VII and the Battle of Bosworth Field (1485). There is an emphasis on recounting the many wars that happened during that period. The Crusades, Great Famine and Plague, Magna Carta, and other various topics fill in the balance. Each chapter is only a few pages of large print text. The whole book can easily be read in one evening. I was hoping for a bit more detail, but herein lies the surprise I had while reading it. .... the book whet MY appetite for medieval history. I fully intend to research books on medieval history to educate myself on this fascinating period of history. Maybe this book would have the same impact on younger readers, which would be great. I just feel that seven year olds are too young to be exposed to some of the more gruesome aspects of medieval history.
