Have you wondered about the place you live in The United States and how it became that state? The story is often more interesting of what it almost became. In Tennessee, there is a legend about the State of Franklin while there are other just as fascinating legends which were fading until the author of this book brought these stories to the reader's attention. We are greatly enriched for his well researched and lively non-fiction work. To make matters ever better, the dust jacket is also a large sized map of what The United States could have looked like if these lost states had come into being. Look out Antiques Roadshow as you will probably be seeing these would be maps someday. Please don't separate the map from the book as the text tells the story of the map.

This book examines proposals for new states that never got off the ground. Some of them only existed on the drafting board, while others were actual states vied for by actual settlers, although Congress decided to go with other plans for other states, which we now know today.

One page jumped right out at me: a proposal for Superior, a state consisting of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and adjacent northern Wisconsin. The author suggests this could be admitted as a Republican state to counterbalance the admission of a new Democratic state, like the District of Columbia or Puerto Rico. The author is apparently unaware that the territory that would be Superior is reliably Democratic.

I flipped through it and thought it was nifty, but my aunt who lives in the State of Jefferson (read the book!) loved it. Light and amusing presentation, not much historical detail, but it's not that kind of book.

This is an interesting book which helps one understand some of the intrigue behind the naming of some of our states.

It's interesting but there are some errors (pic. of Jeff Davis is not the confederate Pres but rather a Union officer and a map that shows WY covering CO pg. 32) which cause me to question the authors credibility. Also it seems heavily anecdotal rather than scholarly - the author never suggests otherwise, just making an observation.

Gave this to my dad for Christmas. It was the one book that the family gathered around and enjoyed browsing through.

And Mr. Trinklein lets it flow well, but sometimes the jokes seem to cover a lack of depth of information. However, the mock photos/postcards/brochure covers are well-done and pleasant. I actually learned a good bit, though.

This book was recommended to me, and when I read the description of it I thought "hey, this is a great idea for a book." Unfortunately, this is not the book I had hoped it would be.

The layout and design of the book is great. Too bad it was wasted on this product. First of all, the title is misleading... several of the "lost states" preceded the U.S. and it is highly unlikely that any of these would have ever been seperate entities, much less states. These include New Sweden and Charlotina. Others discussed included territorial oddities which were NEVER seriously considered for statehood (like Howland, "Lost" Dakota and Rio Rico). These entries are just annoying.

When it comes to actual proposed states the book is better but only two pages are dedicated to each. Why not leave out the Howlands and New Swedens and put in more stuff about actual state proposals? And there are historical errors, the most egregious one was the depiction of Major-General Jefferson Davis (USA) on page 21, where the picture is clearly meant to be President Jefferson Davis, CSA. These two men are both Civil War figures but they certainly did not look anything alike. The fact that the man is wearing a Union general's uniform should have been a dead giveaway. This fast-food approach to history (as epitomized on the History Channel) really doesn't do the subject justice.

But the most annoying thing about this book, and the thing that will mark it for obscurity within the next year or so is how it constantly knocks President George W. Bush. I'm sorry... was this book originally titled "Lost States and Why It's George Bush's Fault?"

PLEASE, someone use the preliminary research here to write a decent book on this subject!
