It's really enjoyable to read such a book that could be a paradigm bender for our medical understanding and future preventive health care system. My comments are mainly confined to "Avicenna's Medicine" and not the original book of Avicenna. "Avicenna's Medicine" gives a lucid and accurate understanding of the holistic Greco-Arabic medical system (known as Unani Tibb) that has enabled physicians in the Levant and beyond to diagnose and treat patients over thousands of years.
Given the authors' academic background and experience as well as their knowledge of Arabic, they succeeded to accurately translate the first volume of the Cannon of Medicine from Medieval Arabic into English. They used modern medical terminology and included commentaries and explanations that made the original text understandable. The book starts with a preface, an introduction, and a premier that explains the conceptual framework that Avicenna used in the Cannon. This definitely was not an easy task since the original Arabic text of Avicenna is not easy to read or to grasp its conceptual framework.
The medical system of Avicenna has deep roots in ancient Greece and in the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia. It is a system that withstood the test of time and was refined by many generations of physicians. It took someone with the extraordinary skills like Avicenna to finally document it in his comprehensive book the "Cannon of Medicine", adding his own experience and interpretations. The authors of the current book have made a remarkable effort to explain this system.

I'll admit that this book was a heavy slog for me to read. The attempts to re-interpret ancient medical concepts such as humors and causes of assorted diseases into their modern versions, are variable in plausibilty. The Avicenna's work itself is often an exercise in skillful ambiguity regarding diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, as might be expected from the doctor to rulers of his age with power of life and death for wrong calls; there seem some insights from this, into the conservative and self-protective nature of the medical profession. The book to me, survives with three stars because of occasional gems that perhaps deserve extraction and dissemination to modern specialists. Purges, fasting, and bloodletting may be out of style, but for instance there is recent evidence of the benefits of fasting. The description of health is poetic. In general, Avicenna's advice about eating, sleep and exercise seems generally sound. Certainly, herbalists and others interested in history of medicine and current alternative medicine, may enjoy parts of this book.

Format: Hardcover
In this translation/adaptation of the first volume of the Cannon of Medicine from Arabic into English, the authors used modern medical terminology and added their commentaries and interpretations of the original text to make it clear and understandable for readers of the 21st century! The remarkable effort by the authors to explain how Avicenna’s observations 1000 years ago are embedded in our current understanding of how the human body functions and reacts to growth aging, and pathological conditions, for instance the authors’ explanation of the role of cellular respiration and hydration in the process of cellular helps the reader understand Avicenna’s concepts on the balance between heat and moisture and how this play an important role in the process of human development and aging.
It is fascinating that a millennium ago Avicenna had already emphasized the basics for healing the human body by means of diet, drugs, or manipulation. For each of these concepts Avicenna provided back then an in depth analysis of how to approach the remedies, but also how the treatments need to be adapted to individual situations and conditions (this is probably what is refereed to today as personalized medicine). It is also remarkable that the Canon has some of the founding elements of today’s clinical trials and medical treatments (e.g. this statement”...The physician here has to apply their medical sense to figure out which is longer, the duration of strength or the duration of the pain…” this is probably what would correspond to the dose –defining concept in modern medicine).

I think this is going to become THE go-to book for modern people studying the wisdom of Avicenna. It's modern and up-to-date, which means newer readers interested in health, philosophy and holistic health will not have to second guess a lot of obscure terms. I expect this to become the authoritative text on Avicenna, and to stay that way, for a long time to come.

Great work and a very interesting read. Dr. Abu-Asab and his colleagues did a great job.
