I have mixed feelings about considering Michelle Obama a fashion icon, First Lady of Style and other blurbs of the like as expressed in this book. There are just few things I would recognize as her strong points when it comes to fashion. They are:

* The fact that she is extremely creative in her use of brooches to enhance and give character to an outfit.
* The way she has brought the "dress" back into being acceptable formal attire for the world of politics instead of the overused "pantsuit".
* Her fitness. She has great arms and shoulders to wear sleeveless and strapless frocks.

Other than the above, Mrs. O's (like this book calls her) fashion choices are oftentimes shocking, and sometimes totally wrong. Author Maria Tomer, who is no doubt fascinated by the First Lady's fashion sense, explains how most of Michelle Obama's fashion choices are realized through Chicago's fashion guru, Ikram Goldman, whose chic store is "all about the mix" in order to achieve "the magic of fashion" (page 194). But personally, I feel a First Lady should incline herself more towards styles of the like of Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang and Oscar de la Renta, rather than eccentrics like Thakoon or Junya Watanabe. Regarding the latter one, the ensemble worn during the Obamas' first European tour in London, during a visit to the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School, composed of a brightly coloured argyle cardigan that seemed to be sewn at the back, giving the impression of burlesque trompe l'oeil and worn over a full skirted dress, seemed more appropriate for a fun cocktail during girl's night out than for an official engagement.

Synopsis:
Building on the success of the Mrs. O website, Mary Tomer's recent book is a beautifully photographed and annotated description of Michelle Obama's fashion style as it progressed over the very public months of Barack Obama's presidential campaign and his first months in office.

Review:
Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy is more than a gorgeous collection of photographs. I found it an education in how Michelle Obama used her political savvy, visibility, and fashion sense to make political statements and to promote young designers from the US and around the world. I am not particularly well versed in the different designers and enjoyed the book's extensive interviews of different designers, stylists and publicists.

It is easy to imagine the excitement at the J.Crew headquarters when Michelle Obama appeared on Jay Leno's Tonight Show wearing her yellow outfit. And the "general joy" that all the Gap employees felt on seeing Michelle Obama in her off-the rack dress on the Fourth of July, 2008. It was touching to read Thakoon Panichgul's reaction to seeing Michelle Obama in his crossover V-back dress on the last night of the Democratic Convention: "I was so shocked and honored to have been part of that moment for her, for her family, for the country."

I recommend Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy - it goes beyond photographs to capture and analyze unique political moments from the lens of fashion.

For all you sceptics who think this book is nothing more than glossy photographs, think again. This book has got to be one of the best I have ever come across in a long time and let me tell you why.

It is jam packed with photographs of the first lady not just in her public role but some dating back to her early days. The close ups on her jewellry, brooches, shoes and swatches are amazing. You get to REALLY scrutinise how classy this woman really is. Pages upon pages (it's a big book) of really beautiful pictures and lots of interviews with her favourite designers - Pinto, Mirzahi, Rodrigues, Sorenson, Kors, Ikram as well as all the jewellers. There is a lot to read - it is a book not a hardback magazine.

It also shows how Michelle will go down in history as THE most fashionable first lady ever. She mixes high end with low end, throws on belts and brooches and makes it her own. She recycles her items and makes completely different outfits every time AND her ability to really work colours is truly amazing. I'm out of breath.

More importantly, the first lady and the author shows that you don't need money to look good. Fashion can be classy as well as cheap and affordable. Fashion is not about someone having the ability to wear Valentino gowns or Gucci or Prada. Fashion should be relateable and many women will be able to relate to Michelle Obama and how she makes clothes WORK for her.

The author has done me a great favour, I have ordered another three copies as Christmas presents for my friends. Fantastic piece of work.
