Great art, okay stories, no re-readablity., November 7, 2009
This review is from: Claws Come Out (Hardcover)
I first learned about this book on a horror comics blog over a year ago. When I stumbled upon it again I had to pick it up.
"Claws Comes Out" styles itself in a fashion similar to the old E.C. Horror Comics. There's a vampy (literally) hostess bookending each tale of women in the usual peril with a decidedly unusual (and probably more realistic) slant.
The good things about "The Claws Come Out" - first off, the art. The art is wonderful and playful and works well with what Pat Lewis is trying to do. I loved the character designs. Artistically, it works. Also, none of the characters are clones. Each female lead is her own being, with differing traits, goals and needs.
Nothing about the book is particularly bad. No real continuity flaws, errors, etc. The main flaw of the book is the stories themselves are only really interesting enough for maybe one read. Even then, a couple (the Gypsy's tale springs to mind) seem to drag on. Even when there's action, it feels like nothing's really going on.
I love comics, and I love studd that's not the mainstream. But for me, the most important part of a comic or graphic novel is my ability to read it over and over and still enjoy it - like, really, with any book I buy. It's not here in "The Claws Come Out." Yes, I love the art - but I need more than that. I can't say, with any honesty, this book was worth the $19.95 retail price or even the $14.95 sale price Amazon is currently hawking it for.
I'll cheerfully give any other Pat Lewis project a chance - but this? Eh. I'm dropping my copy off at a used bookstore tomorrow.

A fun, fun read!, December 14, 2007
This review is from: Claws Come Out (Hardcover)
Pat Lewis has a light, cartoony style that is very appealing to the eye. The fact that the book is quasi-humor, quasi-scary even makes it that much more fun. Each short story is different, and makes you smile and gross out (just a little) at the same time. But in a good way!
This is definitely worth picking up.

Pat Lewis is the man., December 5, 2007
This review is from: Claws Come Out (Hardcover)
I haven't gotten my copy of this book in the mail yet, though I did pre-order it from Amazon. However, I've been reading Pat's work for a while and he pretty much rules. There aren't a lot of good humor comics being put out right now, in my opinion, and Pat's work stands above most other humor comics I've read in recent years. If you like funny stuff, stuff with monsters, and/or "dames," you should get this. Get it now!
