From the costly velvets and furs worn by kings to the undyed wools and rough linens of the peasantry, the clothing worn by the various classes in the Middle Ages played an integral role in medieval society. In addition to providing clues to status, profession, or geographic origin, textiles were a crucial element in the economies of many countries and cities.

Much of what is known about medieval fashion is gleaned from the pages of manuscripts, which serve as a rich source of imagery. This volume provides a detailed look at both the actual fabrics and composition of medieval clothing as well as the period’s attitude toward fashion through an exploration of the illuminated manuscripts in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The last portion of the book is dedicated to the depiction of clothing in biblical times and the ancient world as seen through a medieval lens. Throughout, excerpts from literary sources of the period help shed light on the perceived role and function of fashion in daily life. The book accompanies an exhibition of the same name on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from May 31 to August 14, 2011.

Small but extensive illustrations, basic information

I love the extensive illustrations from period manuscripts, and photos/descriptions of extant clothing that I haven't seen elsewhere. Unfortunately, the book is of such a small size that you need a magnifying glass to see details. The text is written mainly for people who have no previous knowledge of Medieval fashion, but even here there are some interesting tidbits for the serious student. (The previous reviewer mentions that the book covers Renaissance and Reformation fashion, but I don't see that at all. Anyone looking for that here will be disappointed.)

It's a nice book. I just wish it were bigger!

More than pictures

There are many books that introduce the reader to changes in clothing styles over the years. This little book does some of that, but since more than half of the illustrations are from the fifteenth century, it hardly does it well. This book has a different mission. It teaches the reader how to interpret the illustrations of a different age. It reveals the way in which its author sees the physical and cultural reality behind the illustrations. She tells us why she thinks an artist is representing velvet. She draws attention to the smallest details, such as the knots on a Franciscan's belt. She reminds us of the ways in which the artist depicts social class. She teaches us how to see.
The paintings are well chosen. They reveal many details of 15th century furnishings, tableware, and architecture as well as clothing. Occasionally the camera zooms in to reveal extreme detail, such as the painting on the cover. (The whole painting is shown on p. 62.) There are eight pictures of extant cloth or clothing, most (surprisingly) from the thirteenth century. The reproduction is of high quality, so a magnifying glass can be used to reveal more.
I wouldn't recommend this as one's only book on costume, but I do recommend it as a guide for reading and understanding the illustrations in other books.

Visual appeal

This is a small, pretty book. It has some appeal, mostly for the painting reproductions, but has limits as a sourcce. First, it emphasizes the high Middle Ages...and, frankly, the Ren/Ref period. And there are whole topics (such as women's headgear) on which it is silent. I had thought it would be encyclopedic because of its focus, but it doesn't have more information on medieval clothing than one of the good daily-life books. It's still an appealing book in its own way, and wasn't very expensive.
