Once again, Linda Robinson has pulled off the seemingly impossible: She has written a well-researched, accessible book on one of the most secretive tribes in the U.S. military. Not only will a reader learn much about Afghanistan and the use of U.S. Special Forces, but Robinson offers a rare glimpse into how and why the Special Ops community acts as it does. Unlike other academic authors who may rely on secondhand accounts, Robinson's extensive connections and travel provides a vivid narrative that reads well while proving incredibly informative. Her last chapter, on "The Future of Special Operations and American Warfare," offers candid and insightful policy recommendations and predictions. Although she offers many lessons, I particularly found three most needed. One, and perhaps most importantly, policymakers need to learn from the past decade-plus of war and develop a strategy for synergy between special and conventional forces - not just employs these forces tactically. Second, unity of command is essential, and if the top commander is from the conventional forces, he or she must know how to use Special Forces as more than a tactical asset. Third, although "black ops" may be the coolest missions, the Special Forces community needs to embrace "white ops" as well. Unless this third point transforms the tribe, policymakers' attempts to integrate special ops into U.S. strategy - and not just tactics - will be for naught. Robinson has done a service to the nation with this book, which should be required reading by all interested in national security.

I was on one of the ODA's written about in this book and she never visited my site; however, she was free to write a negative report of my team's progress through alternative sources. This is clearly not a factual foretelling of the situation in Afghanistan. It may be based on true events but not a complete accurate account. I am very disappointed to say I will not give further credit to any of her stories based on her negative account and false report of my team. Very much disappointed! We made significant progress and some gave their lives; all just to be discredited by a storyteller which we never met. If she only knew!

An amazing book that should be read by everyone. It provides the reader with insights to different operations that would have never been known if not by the author. Yet, it still amazes me that after being retired for 20 years the problems that I encountered during my 24 years of active duty are still in effect. I would think that "we learn through mistakes as lessons learned". Hopefully, things will change for the better.

She's a great writer, and this book is extremely engaging even if you aren't a mil/policy/counter-insurgency wonk. She has an amazing knack for organizing and explaining everything. I've been looking forward to this book for a long time and it has exceeded my highest expectations.

If you are a novice about special operations then you will enjoy this account. However, if you know the basics about the topic or want to learn what is really going on in Afghanistan, you will quickly realize that Robinson is only delivering "talking points" from senior special operations leaders. Simply put, this book is a joke that glosses over significant problems that special operations leaders avoid due to their lack of moral courage. The leaking of private emails by senior special operations leaders regarding the investigation surrounding Major Jim Gant (see page 291-292, note 3) is especially alarming. Gant is surely a flawed Special Forces officer, but senior special operations leaders should not be able to provide emails - which surely contained information protected by the Privacy Act and possibly classified information - to a reporter/author writing a book! Instead of spurring an investigation of Lieutenant Colonel (now Colonel) Bob Wilson, Colonel Mark Schwartz (now Brigadier General) and Brigadier General Chris Haas (now Major General) - all three have been promoted. See, breaking the law does pay!
In sum, this book is an insult to special operations warriors by embellishing the positive and ignoring problems. It is filled with inaccurate accounts, flagrant lies, and merely repeats the same false media talking points. Robinson is a hack who has sold her credibility for access to senior special operations leaders.

Good account of Village Stability Operations in a certain timeframe. Not a "blood and guts" story if you are looking for this, but a good book for someone really interested in SF and COIN. Shows how lack of a coherent strategy (and understaning of human terrain), can deminish a multitude of victories at the tactical level.

Put this book and Robinson's earlier "Masters of Chaos" together and you will have a clear, informative view of special ops in every respect. If, for some reason, you do not choose to read the entire book, be sure to read Chapter 13, which is the author's conclusions on how the American military must look at warfare in the future and strategize accordingly. This is not your (great) grandfather's military. Linda Robinson continues to be given unique access to
the inner circles of special ops. An excellent read.
