Great resource, but where's the Metro map?

Worked well for my one day in Lisbon, at least for catching the main sights. I did the three neighborhoods walk and Belem in one day, which was no problem. I didn't find it necessary to take breaks and soak in a lot of the street scenes, so what Rick recommended be done in 3 days, I accomplished in 1. Either way, it was a great guide and handy to have on my phone when I was without internet connection. One recommendation would be for Rick to include a metro map. The metro was fantastic and only cost 6 euro for a 24 hour pass!

You can't go wrong with a Rick Steves' guidebook

We have bought other guide books, but always return to Rick Steves clear, concise and well laid out books. The print size is perfect for "aging" eyes. Rick makes it easy to navigate seamlessly around new cities and towns. We solved the great metro system in Porto as well through his complete Portugal guidebook which we bought after altering our itinerary. Well worth it!!! After his recommendation for vinho verde, we are enjoying this wine here in Porto.

It really is just a snapshot book

This really is a snapshot book. I LOVE Rick Steves' travel books but this one really barely touched on Lisbon. There wasn't even a good metro map. I ended up coming back to buy the Eyewitness Travel Book. He did have snapshot in the title so to be fair, that's pretty much all the book is. Lisbon is not a snapshot city so if you're a first time visitor, buy a more comprehensive book. There's too much history and too many sites for just a skim.

Thorough, Straight-forward City Guide

Rick Steves is essential reading for a great many travelers. He knows his territory and provides a wealth of information about, in this case, Lisbon, Portugal. This volume is his snapshot version of his Portugal guides, and it proves to be a handy, light-weight, easy-to-refer-to source. I found it a ready reference for most of the touristic highpoints in the city, although I spent much longer than his recommended three days in Lisbon.

Smart-phones and other devices may soon replace travel guides in book form for many travelers, and Rick Steves volumes may not be “mandatory” reading in the future with so many other options available. My guess is he doesn’t have to worry about that much for awhile and he’s astute enough to keep his work in the mainstream.

My only reservation about this snapshot view of Lisbon is that, for me, it lacks much of the passion and edgy energy of the city. I found the Portuguese people reserved with outsiders but warm and engaging among themselves. Their demeanor often suggested discouragement with their country’s economic woes and with their being on the periphery of European life, having only emerged from a stern dictatorship in 1975. Yet a simple walk-through of the classic neighborhoods will unlikely provide much insight into the lives of the people.

Rick Steves is a well-established brand with thousands and thousands of enthusiastic followers. It hardly seems fair to give his books less than a five star rating – he gives the kind of comprehensive, colorful advice that his many readers love. It’s hard to argue with that.

Used this very helpful guide to Lisbon to prepare for our trip and to carry with us. It helped to have an absolutely wonderful time. Do be careful of pickpocketers on the trams! My husband lost a bunch of euros due to theft.
