*Tools that can be understood and used immediately
*How anxiety-related behaviors impact students and easy to implement strategies that are really effective!
*Case studies that are springboards to creating effective intervention support plans.
*Progress monitoring tools that measure if the interventions are effective!
*Clearly outlined components of a transition and how to support all students be successful with the numerous transitions they incur in the school day.
*The IEP goals and objectives included in the book are fantastic templates
*Protocols for unsafe behaviors
*Comprehensive list of helpful apps

This book was a welcomed companion to Jessica Minahan's first book the Behavior Code. To be able to have all the strategies, techniques and guides right at my fingertips helps me to be more supportive for my child. She provides many simple ways to help teachers and parents help the children navigate their anxiety and evolve themselves positively. I am proof that her techniques work. We have been using Jessica Minahan's universal strategies for a few years now and they have provided my son with a positive way to self regulate himself and manage his anxiety. Which in turn has helped our entire family unit. Jessica Minahan's approach should be taught in all public school systems to the entire staff. I highly recommend this book for every school, mental health professional and parents who have or know a child with anxiety.

As a middle school special education teacher I frequently encounter challenging behavior from my students. Most of the behavior I encounter can be resolved with a quick heart to heart in the hall between teacher and student. However, there are times when no matter how hard I try I just cannot help the student resolve their behavior without some kind of intervention plan. The FAIR behavior plan templates and examples in the “The Behavior Code Companion,” are invaluable tools. I think that the author, Jessica Minahan, took this book to the next level when she decided to provide support for teachers to develop a broader understanding of student behavior. The six essential concepts of behavior, which are outlined in this book, have been a cornerstone for productive conversations with colleagues as they seek my help in managing the challenging behavior my students can sometimes present with. The essential concepts of behavior support an understanding of student behavior which lead teachers toward considering the whole child and not just surface behavior. I have been able to put the templates provided in the book to immediate use in my classroom and the information provided in chapter six has enabled me to customize my own FAIR behavior plans for students. One of the most appealing aspects of “The Behavior Code Companion,” are the anecdotal stories sprinkled throughout the book, making you want to read on!! It is obvious that this book was written from experience and not just based upon ideals. “The Behavior Code Companion,” has my highest recommendation as an essential tool for teachers of all school age children and adolescents. -J. Renna, M. Ed.

As a teacher working with children that exhibit aggressive and unsafe behavior, Ms. Minahan’s methods have empowered me to respond effectively in situations where I may have previously felt helpless or lost. While her first book, The Behavior Code, encourages teachers and school staff to adjust their own patterns in thinking about and responding to challenging behavior, this book is a valuable resource for taking action. The Behavior Code Companion reviews and expands on chapters of the original book and provides case studies, practice sheets and a wealth of templates and useful apps. The practice sheets are effective tools for school staff to proactively plan consistent responses and strategies to use with their students. Chapters 6 and 7 clearly explain the steps in creating, implementing and monitoring a FAIR behavior intervention plan. Example IEP objectives are provided, as well as plans for safety protocols. This book is a beneficial resource for any classroom!

The Behavior Code Companion is an essential resource for more than special education audiences—every educator working in a public school setting will interact, to varying degree, with children who have mental health issues and/or behavioral challenges. The Behavior Code Companion guides readers through the underlying concepts of behavior so they are equipped to respond proactively to situations with neutral tone and productive actions. As an art teacher in a large elementary school, I teach every child in grades K-5 and must respond, sometimes alone, to circumstances as they arise in my classroom. Minahan emphasizes that “behavior is communication” and, in the fast-paced school environment, educators may form false assumptions about the underlying function of a student’s behavior. For example, students with deficits in one or more executive functioning areas might demonstrate non-compliance or disruptive behaviors. Using the data sheets to note the antecedent to a specific behavior, the actual behavior, and subsequent consequences (ABC), I can reflect on and process the situation later with the child’s teacher and/or special education teachers to identify replacement behavior strategies. The intervention strategies in the Companion have proven extremely helpful to navigate other potential problem areas, such as transitions. Frequent transitions, including down time, are a reality for every specialist class. Though most children can self-regulate during transitions, some may require help as they cease one activity and initiate a new activity. The template for transition support enables me to better prepare individual students for transitions between activities and back to their classroom. For those of us working under tight schedules with hundreds of students, this book is a must-read.
