This is the story of a boy named Dennis who is silent. The picture on the cover gives you a clue. (hint- white makeup = mime)

What does it take to be a friend? Readers of this book will discover that it really begins with face to face interactions and this may serve as a reminder to build friendships by understanding each other. This story is all about honoring unique differences between individuals and being able to accept them as they are.

This book will be perfect in any friendship unit and is worthy of multiple reads in order to mine the understanding present in the gorgeous pictures that add additional depth to the storyline!

A tender and powerful story about the loneliness a child feels until he has someone who understands him. While this book is aimed at the children just starting to learn how to make friends in a school setting, I think this story is something any aged reader can relate to. The story is one that will fill the reader with courage to be yourself and re-assurance that there is a friend for everyone.

Ms. Yoon has a knack for creating stories that emotionally connect with children and are also simplistic and charming in their excution. The subdued color palette with red accents is eye-catching and plays well with the short text. One of my favorite parts of the story is the title “BE A FRIEND”, what a subtle and perfect way to get kids to remember to be ‘that friend’ to someone else.

This is a good book for pre-school thru KG classroom storytime or lap-reading at home.

This book is good for beginning readers. Not too many words on a page. I can imagine the good discussion my grandson and I will have about this book. Really neat pictures. I am sure we will also be miming different things because of this book. I think it is very educational and creative.

This book is delightful. Sweet message about friendship and accepting uniqueness. As a bonus, it inspires creative play. Of course, my kids immediately starting miming everything! It was fun. The illustrations are beautiful.

Dennis is an extraordinary boy who doesn't speak a word and mimes everything instead. He expresses himself with motion and acting instead of words. This sets him apart from other children in more ways than one. It gets lonely being a mime when everyone else would rather speak than listen. But one day a little girl notices Dennis and a beautiful friendship blossoms between them.

I've always said that the best kind of people are the ones that you can have a comfortable silence with. Most people want to talk and think that silence is awkward but I couldn't disagree more. It may just be the introvert in me but I've always found that actions speak louder than words!

Be A Friend is a beautifully illustrated story with a straightforward message. Be a friend. Everyone needs a friend no matter how 'strange' they may seem. Be a friend and you will soon see that everyone is extraordinary.

I love this book. The rich, warm, colors pair beautifully with the grungy, antiqued coloring of each page. I love the diversity of the children in the book and their bright, happy faces. The red dashed lines really pop and depict Dennis' actions, giving us a look into his own personal thoughts and world.

This is a beautiful book and I highly recommend it!

How I love this delightful picture book for ALL ages! Anyone who has ever felt "outside the box" will find solace in Dennis's story. As an accomplished author-illustrator, Salina Yoon has perfectly balanced minimal text with simple but expressive illustrations (using subtle colors punctuated with red). She deftly conveys Dennis's active imagination and his loneliness as well as the slow but sure friendship that changes his world. I have no doubt that multiple reads by many over time will turn this uplifting book into an "evergreen."

Most of the books that i have read for my children I have read only once, because I find it offensive how little thought was put into creating the book. It seems that most authors/publishers are content with cute drawings and a meaningless string of words. Ms Yoon definitely does not fit that mold. Her books are very thoughtful, and well-written. They always strive to teach and improve a child's outlook. This latest book is a great example of that.

This book is a celebration of being a little "different" and not fitting the mold of what is traditionally "normal".

"Dennis was an ordinary boy... who expressed himself in extraordinary ways."

He doesn't talk- but instead is quite the expressive mime. Though he doesn't get bullied or specifically alienated in any way from his peers it is clear that he has trouble communicating with him and thus feels lonely. One day though, that all changes and an unexpected friend breaks through his "wall" and he forms a genuine, wonderful friendship.

The story is simple and sweet and perfect for any child who sometimes feels a little lonely. I also love how several mime scenes are "acted out" using dotted red lines as motion indicators. I thought that was a unique and fun touch, and would be a nice activity for children to try and act out themselves.
