Product Description

New Yorker Magazine artist Tomer Hanuka collects his best comics work from the last five years, including stories previously published in Bipolar, the award winning comics series co-created with his twin brother. This collection of nine short stories deals with identity, memory, and destiny. From the hollow existence of twenty-something urbanites in Brooklyn and their magical parallel lives, to a dense psychological collage of a split-second lifetime, the stories touch a raw nerve we never knew we had.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not essential, December 3, 2007
By E. Clemente (Sacramento, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Placebo Man collects Tomer Hanuka's stories from "Bipolar", an experimental comic anthology. I actually found this on sale at a bookstore not being familiar with Hanuka, but attracted to the art. It reminded me a little of both Kent Williams and David Lapham (but less polished), so I decided to give it a shot. There are 9 unrelated black & white short stories in the book, ranging from surreal to very surreal. Like any collection of stories, there will be hits and misses, although in this book the quality does not vary greatly. The more successful stories are the ones where Hanuka is being more straightforward, my favorite being the story of an old Johnny Weissmuller reflecting back on his life. Some stories are hard to get, but never fail to evoke the desired emotion. Overall I'm glad I picked it up but I wouldn't say it's an essential part of my library. I'd like to see more of Hanuka but in long-form. Story 3/5. Art 3/5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty solid work, January 5, 2007
Great art with really good, and often very odd/surreal stories (but I think that was the goal).
