Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Fiery counsels the seriously stealthy in detail. He gives lots of attention to selecting hiding places and gaining access to a site when access is not readily available. He expounds at length on hiding things in public restrooms and explores such arcana as access to soap and other dispensers, along the way confirming attentive modern readers' hunch that there is now--more's the stashing pity--a dearth of toilet tanks in public facilities. Some of Fiery's strategies are more novel than others. His discussion of Simplex lock combinations, for instance, though perhaps not groundbreaking, is certainly intriguing, but hiding things under snow piles is old hat to anyone who has ever been a beer-swilling northern teen with empties to ditch. A useful book for those who need it, especially with the appended index of hiding places and list of Simplex lock combinations. Mike Tribby --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Questionable gray area ethics, but clever and useful. , May 30, 2005
Cover:
Thoroughly orange, with a picture of a wary, dishevelled man stowing something in a fencepost.

Artwork, illustrations, photos, diagrams:
The diagrams are sufficient and well-made. There are numerous grayscale photographs. There are no interior illustrations resembling the cover art.

Offensiveness warnings:
A lot of pretty strong expletives, some disturbing anecdotes. Contains numerous references to illegal activities, and even encourages them in some cases, such as breaking locks. Deals with "gray area" ethics.

Attitude, mood:
Snarky, cynical, rough, but with a sense of humor. Perceptive, intelligent. References cited correctly. Doesn't overestimate skill. Alarmingly crude towards homeless people, but not sexist or racist. Streetsmart and open, it describes every risk involved with each procedure, so that you don't have to find out the hard way.

The book explains that there are three primary ways that hiding things in public places can be useful: 1) you drop something off and pick it up later, a cache. 2) a one-way transaction, where you drop something off and someone else picks it up. 3) A two-way transaction, where you drop something off, someone else picks it up, and they leave something for you.

Special skills introduced:
How to hide stuff in pre-existing fixtures of your area. How to buy or create special things in which to hide stuff. Breaking lock combinations. Having safe, anonymous transactions with people.

Although not all of these are referred to in this book, it is probably especially useful for:
Homeless people, who need places to keep their things. People living in cramped apartments, who also need places to keep their things. Spies, or people pretending to be spies for fun. Live Action Roleplayers, who might incorporate secret hiding places into gameplay. Glamourbombers, who like to hide secret things for other people to find. People into self-defense and being street-smart. People involved in illegal activities who need to stay anonymous. Informants who are trying to tell detectives about illegal things but who need to stay anonymous themselves. Detectives watching out for people doing illegal things. Someone just trying to keep their possessions private.

3.0 out of 5 stars Taking it into consideration, August 12, 2000
By A Customer
Ill keep it short and sweet. You pretty much need to take the entire books contents into consideration... the book breathes a lot of creativity into the subject... especially since from my knowledge of police work I know that you dont want to hide them in incredibly obvious hiding places everyone would pick. If you are going to read this book its a good idea to add your own creativity and not limit yourself to just these places. also a note on the combinations you have to be patient and trial and error sometimes is the only way to figure things out but usually patience is rewarded not only was the previous review not helpful it was harmful....

4.0 out of 5 stars Hiding is good, February 7, 2002
By A O Cazola (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
I picked up this book on a whim. I have never felt the need to hide many things, even less so to hide them in public places; yet this book has come in handy.

It comes complete with handy diagrams and useful ideas. Some of the suggestions in this book have proven to be extremely useful...who knew, for example, that fenceposts are such excellent hiding places.

How to Hide Things in Public Places comes off a little earnest perhaps, but still maintains its usefulness and usability.
