Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Your bedroom should be a safe haven, but unfortunately more and more research is revealing that the bedroom may be one of the most toxic places in the home. Consider that the average conventional mattress contains more toxic chemicals than a 50 gallon oil drum, and that our skin, the largest organ of the body, is also the most porous entry point. It is no wonder that chemicals found in mattresses, known to cause toxic reproductive effects, are regularly being found at significant levels in human blood samples. Walter Bader outlines the dangers of the toxic threats lurking in the home so that, armed with knowledge, you can defend yourself and your family against them.

About the Author
Walter Bader was one of the first to discover that chemical exposure can occur during sleeping hours as a result of the out-gassing from the ingredients used in the manufacture of mattresses and bedding, Mr. Bader's mission is to share this knowledge with the world. Toxic Bedroom is his first publication, and is the culmination of experience and wisdom gained from years of technical research and speaking with chemically injured consumers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Getting a Good Night's Sleep..., May 16, 2007
This is a great book for transitioning to a healthy living environment beyond simply eating organic. While pragmatic in approach, this book is by no means dry or overly scholarly. In lieu of an alarming scenario without suggestion, a simple approach is offered to create a healthy environment. As an organic consumer, I was shocked to find that I was oblivious to the consequences of my bedroom environment. A comprehensive list of chemicals commonly found in mattresses, along with their characteristics provides a compelling argument against conventional mattresses. Removing toxins and carcinogens from my bed had not occurred to me as a necessary consideration. With the simple avoidance and replacement approach, organic sleeping has never seemed so necessary or approachable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making Your Bedroom a Sanctuary, August 27, 2008
As I suffer from various allergies, for years I have desired and as finances allowed endevoured to make my home the most toxic free place possible. I have read that even if you can't affored to redo your whole home using healthy materials, the place to concentrate on in your endevour to have a healthy living envirorment is the bedroom. You spend one third of you day sleeping and because of the restorative power of a good night's sleep, your bedroom should be a sanctuary. Wlater Bader gives you guidelines on exactly how to accomplish this goal.

Bader tells about the harmful naterials that go into a conventional polyurethene foam matress, a memory foam mattess and the flame retardents used on your mattresses. Wool is a natural flame retardent. Bader also shares the down side to conventially grown cotton. Twenty five percent of the world's pesticides and a good portion of the other toxic chemicals are used to grow convential cotton. For this reason the author recommends organic cotton. I do not want to be harming myself with the outgasing of these poisonous pesticides and other checicals, nor do I ewant to be harming the envirorment. As the sheep are free range animals and not dipped in toxic chemicals, the author also recommends pure grow will be used in bedding products. He also highly recommends natural latex, which is from the rubber tree plant. As well as discussing the various types of bed construction materials and bedding choices, Bader also discusses the part that electromagnetic fields play in having a healthy bedroom. He also has an informative chapter on dust mites and how to keep them out of your bedroom. Bader's book is a well written, informative read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of my symptoms explained, June 4, 2007
Fatigue, congestion, headaches, trouble concentrating...I never had thought before about my sleeping environment. My next mattress will be an organic one, if at all possible, and I've already starting taking steps to make my sleeping environment less toxic. This book makes it easy to learn what to do to get a better night's sleep and FEEL better all day.
