Product Description

This book/eBook package is your guide to getting more interesting and creative photos with the 15.1 megapixel Canon EOS 50D. It discusses every camera setting on this high-quality camera in a clear, well-illustrated style, with many integrated tips and QuickSteps, but it also does much more. You'll also learn the concepts of photography as you learn why and when you use specific settings, not just how to set them. You'll find that this guide helps you quickly master your camera so you'll be able to get the kinds of photos you had hoped for.

The printed edition of the book is black & white and has a well-liked spiral binding that lets the book lie flat or be folded back on itself.

The eBook edition of the book, available as an instant download or on a CD disc, is a printable and searchable full-color version of the same book in Adobe's popular PDF format. You can print it out in whole or part in high resolution, and read it on a PC or Mac using the free Acrobat Reader, or any up-to-date Web browser. This eBook also includes clickable links to 50 or so animations, movies and other resources that illustrate the core concepts of digital photography such as exposure compensation, lens focal lengths, histograms, and much, much more. (To use these animations you do need an Internet connection.)

Just some of the things you'll learn in this book are how to take pictures in fully automatic point and shoot mode and how your camera captures digital images; how to play back and manage your images; how to use buttons, dials, and menus; control image size and quality, including using the popular and high-quality RAW format; shoot continuously; use all of the camera's exposure modes and exposure controls to get photos that show the scene exactly as it is, or as you want to interpret it; use histograms for the best possible exposures; see how to control sharpness in your photographs; and how to use focus, depth-of-field, sharpness, softness, and blur creatively. Learn all about light and color and how to take advantage of them. Understand how they change throughout the day and seasons, how they're affected by the weather, and how light's direction and quality affects highlights and shadows. See how to set white balance to capture colors the way you see them. Learn how to use your zoom lens creatively when photographing scenery, interiors, people, and very small subjects. See how to creatively use the built in, and optional external flash, indoors and out and in good light and bad, and how to use studio lighting for product shots and portraits. Explore little known but essential flash techniques such as fill and slow sync flash. Finally, see how to use Live View, continuous photography, picture styles, and remote control photography; customize the camera to better suit your shooting style; and care for your camera.

1.0 out of 5 stars not worth $36.95 or anything close to this amount!, March 28, 2009
By D. Marquez "50D user in Lakewood, CA" (Lakewood, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had very high expectations when I ordered this book. As soon as I opened the package and saw the low quality of the paper it was printed on (& in B/W too!) I was reminded of the lecture notes I used to "Xerox" in college. This book is NOT, repeat NOT!, for those who already know the basics of photography.

I expected deeper discussions on the features of my EOS 50D but instead got a book on what the user manual says plus what I already know about photography. My money might have been better spent on the DVD version of how to use the 50D.

I do not recommend this book...

4.0 out of 5 stars well organized, thorough, many helpful animations, March 8, 2009
By Gary Miller (Anchorage, AK USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With Short Courses new book on the Canon 50D digital camera, I learned about the basics of photography through 7 well organized chapters, and 166 pages. Author Dennis P Curtain is a pro photographer who decided to use his shooting experience in books on photography, with some 28 books on Canon alone, plus Olympus, Nikon, Sony, from pro level to point and shoot cameras, as well as, books on Digital Camera Workflow to Digital Desktop Studio Photography to Photoshop Books. I was impressed at his grasp of so much, and presenting it in a way, I could learn quickly, get the history or reasoning of why something is done, i.e. the animation that shows how an SLR works when you compose an image and press the shutter button.

The book begins in Chapter 1 showing basics of camera controls and explaining about creativity, the digital sensor, and goes through the Canon 50 D features in detail with excellent illustrations. Whereas the instruction booklet from Canon that came with the camera is small in size versus the 8.5 x 11 sized ebook from Short Courses, the book takes it's time in giving the reader a good understanding of photography, and how this camera works, and how to make it work at it's best for a given task.

Chapter 2 is about Controlling Exposure, first showing how the camera's auto features work, then detailing the Creative Zones of making your own settings to get the best image. Many animations, that are accessed by clicking on it, that opens up a webpage to illustrate points, like how aperture effects depth of field. He also includes Tips in a separate box with illustrations to make the point easier to grasp.

Chapter 3 is about Controlling Sharpness, showing when, how, and what technique is best for a given objective, again making the reader smarter as he goes through the many examples, and understanding the camera.

Chapter 4: Capturing Light and Color helped me understand color, white balance.

Chapter 5 on Lenses explained basics to the current image stabilization, and specifics on Canon lenses, saving me from additional research to add to own.

Chapter 6 is about Flash and Studio Lighting, showing basics and moves into more pro level applications, so it gives me room to grow if I choose. Portraits, Fill Flash, FE Lock....

Chapter 7's Other Features and Commands, is the more advanced chapter, since by now I'd tried most of the camera's features, got more confidence in my skills, and was ready to take a few more risks. For the Canon 50D, it also went into new features of this camera, like Live View, use and tips, picture styles, custom functions... He ends with care for your camera, which as all know, is vital after you've spent $ 1500 on a camera.

I liked his pace, professionalism, and animations/tips to educate me. Good book, I'm sure others are equally well written, and will teach the reader about the particular camera, and at your own pace. Remember that you can skip to any part of the ebook at will, really helps. For I found I'd forgotten somethings, and could re-read specifics on what I wanted to do.
