Inspired in part by Dr. E's sold-out class at UNC Chapel Hill, this book packs a semester's worth of knowledge, and ten years of running profitable internet companies, into a single volume. He's spoken the Harvard Law School content management and digital rights management for artists, and he's shared panels with the Register of Copyrights; his disseration on an artificial retina for the blind won a Merrill Lynch Innovations grant, and now Dr. E's creating a brand new curriculum to lay the context for a renaissance in business, art, and culture.
This book can save you thousands in education and make you millions in business, but those are side benefits. The real value lies in the spiritual wealth this book bequeaths, from which all other wealth derives. The pages, inspired by the classics, will set you free to become rich beyond your wildest dreams while pursuing Truth's Beauty.
Dr. E will lead you on Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey--on the high adventure of artistic entrepreneurship. It is not for the faint of heart.
Upon joining the Fellowship, you will be given the One Idea--your light saber, One Ring, and Colt .45 revolver--Ideals are Real. Dr. E will show you how to leverage the One Idea in the realms of technology, law, business, and art, en route to making your passion your profession and your avocation your vocation.
Over time, all paper currencies have an average value of zero. But art, based upon classical ideals, is priceless. Dr. E will teach you to call the bluff.
With pensions evaporating and wealth and homes being tranferred to Wall Street while the government puts you in debt and prints money, Dr. E sees that the best investment is yourself--your passions and your dreams. Want to set up your own stock photography shop? Want to get your neighborhood art gallery online? Want to launch a record label? Want to write, publish, and market your book? Want to shoot an indie feature and distribute it? Rock out with Dr. E--he'll show you how.
With humanities departments deconstructing the Great Books and classics, and MBA programs training students to write TPS reports and play silly games at Enron, Andersen, and Worldcom; with Hollywood and NY publishing in decline, and video games longing for deeper meaning--for souls, Dr. E rides into town, outnumbered and surrounded on all sides.
But he's armed with the One Idea.
Ideals are Real.
And just as Dante wrote The Inferno in exile, just as Socrates was sentenced to death for Truth's beauty, just as the United States Constitution was written not by lawyers, but by rebels and renegades who took the Great Books and Classics to heart, Dr. E Will show you how to build immortal brands, sustainable ventures, and lasting art. You gotta take it to heart--Ideals are Real.
From Open Source technologies to Microsoft DRM, from blogging to print on demand, this book will present you with the optimum blend of technology, law, and business know--how to launch your dreams, and cash in on the infinite value of your values--all that make you you.
About the Author
Dr. E is spearheading the ArtsEntrepreneurship.com program at UNC Chapel Hill. He founded jollyroger.com in 1995, and now runs over 30 sites. He presented Authena Open Source DRM/CMS at the Harvard Law School OSCOM, and 22surf was accepted to the Zurich OSCOM. Both Authena and 22surf are aimed at helping indie artists/creators. Dr. E received a B.A. in physics from Princeton and a Ph.D. in physics from UNC Chapel Hill where his dissertation on an artifical retina for the blind received several NSF grants and a Merrill Lynch Innovations Award. The retina-chip research appeared in publications including Popular Science and Business Week, and the project continues to this day. The New York Times deemed jollyroger.com "simply unprecedented," adding that the site "teems with discussion, the kind that goes well beyond freshman lit 101." Dr. E has published four books including two novels and a poetry collection. He called the bluff early on and invested his most valuable asset--his time--into ventures founded upon the Great Books and Classics.
