Product Description

In August of 2005, a grieving mother and her supporters laid siege to Crawford, Texas. Cindy Sheehan set up camp outside of President Bushs ranch, determined to find some answers. For 26 days, all eyes were on Camp Casey.

At the center of it all was Crawford's own Lone Star Iconoclast. In the heart of the reddest of Red States, The Iconoclast found itself caught between the public's (deeply conservative) expectations, and the papers publisher, W. Leon Smiths, sense of journalistic duty to report objectively. THE VIGIL is an invaluable record of The Iconoclasts coverage, with Sheehan herself providing a scene-setting foreword.

The result is a high stakes, blow-by-blow account of the events as they unfolded. You experience this vigil right along with the writers and participants: the heat, the fire ants, the gunplay, the celebrity appearances, and the intense emotional rollercoaster that has yet to end. Smith and his crew demonstrated a level of professional virtue thatto quote Sheehan herselfshines like a lone spark of integrity in the prairie darkness.

About the Author

W. Leon Smith was born in Central Texas in 1953. He has worked in every facet of the newspaper business and has published several award-winning newspapers during the past 30 years, including The Lone Star Iconoclast, which gained international recognition when The Iconoclast endorsed John Kerry for President in 2004 over local part-time resident George W. Bush.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an EXCELLENT BOOK, January 1, 2007
This review is from: The Vigil: 26 Days In Crawford, Texas (All Access) (Paperback)
Well, some reviewers who are warmongers obviously have their agendas and their activists who have not read the books they are reviewing. They are part of the Neo-Con conspiracy to keep the American public in the dark about the truth. I am the author of "Land of Childhood's Fears" - a book about the Vietnam War - (just google the title and see) and so I speak with a bit of authority. This book is very true-to-life. It is a glaring example of the attitude of the current administration - THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US - THEY NEVER CARED ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THEIR OWN GREED. My Web site has video Documentaries you can download FREE - So before you buy the negative reviews on Cindy Sheehan, learn the TRUTH. Read this book, and my book "Land of Childhood's Fears" which you can also get at Amazon. Take a week to read these two books, and your views about the war in Iraq will drastically change - download the videos from my web site and your entire paradigm structure about the country you live in will change. In the Bible, 2 Peter Chapter 3, it says that in the last days, people are "WILLINGLY IGNORANT". It is a shame that people don't WANT to learn the truth, because what they would have to do to ACT on that truth is unthinkable.

5.0 out of 5 stars objective reporting, February 21, 2006
This review is from: The Vigil: 26 Days In Crawford, Texas (All Access) (Paperback)
Several of the negative reviews for this book seem politically motivated only and also contain incorrect information. The book, first of all, is not written by Sheehan and she will not profit from sales. Secondly, the book is an accounting of not only the pro-Sheehan Camp Casey but also the pro-Bush/pro-war side of things. It is objective and also contains interviews with some interesting people who were in Crawford, TX last August. The perspectives of the reporters were compelling as well, and one was decidely NOT pro-Sheehan, if you read between the lines. The editor added his comments about the challenges of a small town newspaper with minimal staff taking on the task of covering this event on almost an hourly basis for 26 days. It is a must for journalism classes everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Facts...., February 21, 2006
By Veretas "J" (Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Vigil: 26 Days In Crawford, Texas (All Access) (Paperback)
We can have a tough time understanding situations from afar. Especially when all we know of them are what we are told. How can we form our own opinions if we are'nt spared the ones who come from vendettas? This book recounts the facts; Why it was important to hold this event, what it meant to the people involved in it, and what it means as an American to sacrifice (at the highest social degree). I am a law student and have learned one thing. This is beaten into our heads to form us as future administers of justice; Look at the facts, view the law (or in this case your morals and ethics) and form your own opinion. We must be given a factual account of the important events that build our country. This book does just that, and I thank all who were involved.
