I got this just because Nate Powell illustrated it. The man's brilliant. Other work I'm familiar with captures an emotional honesty that's hard to describe, set in the borderland between metaphor and nightmare.

But I suppose even fine artists like Powell need to pay bills. His art's as good as ever. The text is the problem, though. It's a rehashing, with fresh FOIA documents, of some of the US governments more shameful and outrageous moments, vaguely connected with the theme of food. The Rosenbergs' Jello ID card, Castrol's un-poisoned milkshake, a pittance of stolen ice cream used to frame a civil right activist. Well, it's all true, and documented in the government's own words. But, as a screed of righteous outrage, the randomness blunts any point it might have made. As an ironic statement of something or other, the food theme comes across as tangential - I suppose it could have been pets, or clothes, or cars rather than food.

Creative minds make the most surprising connections. Brilliant minds imbue those connections with depth and meaning. With so much raw data to pick from in the government's own records of its darker deeds, absurd coincidences become compulsory. These authors (and I don't hold Powell responsible) noted coincidences of the kind that can't be avoided, but failed in that second step: the one where they make it something more than a random fluke.
