If you're a tourist headed for Manhattan this probably isn't the book for you. It appears to be written for young veggans living in NY looking for hip hangouts and eats. For an openminded 60ish tourist with one week in Manhattan looking for a variety there was very little in this book that was of any appeal. Generally finding things by area and interest was difficult even if not applicabe to my needs. For over 30 tourist spend your money on other tour books.

This book is great! Really a locals perspective with off the beaten track things. I got it for a friend moving to the city and she's marked all over it. A wide range of topics covered extensively.

Great gift idea for a coffee table or a traveler that prefers the more unique experience.

I began reading this guide before my first trip to NYC over Spring Break. Before I arrived, I dog-eared pages, highlighted text, etc. The book is organized by activity (food, museums, volunteer opportunities..), but there aren't very clear distinctions (i.e. chapters); familiarize yourself with its layout beforehand so you can easily flip to your favorite sections.

It NEVER led me astray in my adventures. Seriously. Never.

One of my favorite NYC days (I'm an ATL native, people) was spent at the very beautiful New York Public Library in Mid-Manhattan, then at a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant in LES, capped by a jaunt to Pearl's in Bushwick. I MEAN. If you're looking for non-mainstream NYC activities (I did plenty of those, btw), buy this book. Let it be your beginner's guide to going-out-and-doing-s***-on-a-whim-in-New York-someday.

If you show the book some love, it will show you some, too. Stuff your MTA map up in that. Use it as your bookmark!

Understanding a living city is best done by living in it. "Zinester's Guide to NYC: The Last Wholly Analog Guide to NYC" is a guide to the life of New York that isn't the life presented by tourism, but instead the best of the best that's off the beaten path and that truly reflects the New York lifestyle that real New Yorkers live. "Zinester's Guide to NYC" is a guide for the NYC tourist who doesn't just want to be a tourist.

I am not even halfway through this book and I have already flagged dozens of pages. I am a native New Yorker and there are so many things in this book that sound awesome that I have never heard of before now. I can't wait to check out so many of these things, I wish the days were longer so I could spend more time using this guide. It has everything, from bicycle polo, to cheap vegan eats to the best places to get a slice all over the city. You'll also get great snarky commentary from some of the funniest writers in the world of zines. It's so cheap, I can't see any reason why you wouldn't get this book. It's AWESOME.
